EXPIRED This article relates to an offer or promotion which has now expired.
You’d be forgiven for thinking Spontaneous Escapes was a regular monthly offer before – basically it was. Since September 2017 only two months were skipped – February 2018 and February 2019.
However as part of the early January devaluation of the KrisFlyer scheme, Singapore Airlines announced that Spontaneous Escapes was to become a permanent feature with discounted miles offers every month.
That means even the busy Chinese New Year period (which next comes round in late January 2020) should have offers for the first time, if they stick to their word.
The first of Singapore Airlines’ regular Spontaneous Escapes offers has been launched, with KrisFlyer redemption discounts to a wide range of destinations on the SIA and SilkAir network for March and April 2019, ranging from Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles.
As usual it’s a short booking window running from today until 28th February. That means you have exactly two weeks to lock in these special redemption deals.
Pay Economy, fly Business
The headline offer this month is the ability to redeem selected routes at Economy Class rates, but fly in Business Class.
That means discounts of 45% to 61% depending on the redemption zone. On some routes which also feature Premium Economy, it’s the equivalent of paying “two classes down” to secure a Business Class redemption seat – truly excellent value.
Half price Economy awards
We hardly ever recommend using your hard-earned miles for Economy Class redemptions, with a few exceptions to very expensive destinations with no low-cost alternatives like Koh Samui.
This Spontaneous Escapes offer changes things though. Make these awards half price and the equation shifts completely.
An Economy Class saver award to London for example is now just 19,000 miles, exceptional value.
That doesn’t mean all the Economy offers make sense though (Kuala Lumpur at 3,750 miles is still only average value given the price of flying an LCC on that route), but there are certainly some good rates here.
Intra-zone deals
Unlike previous versions of Spontaneous Escapes, where travel was to or from Singapore and to get the discount on a more complex journey through Singapore you had to potentially ‘attach’ two of the discounted flights together, this time Singapore Airlines has some country-specific promotions.
For example to fly from Sydney to Hong Kong, previously 65,000 miles in Business Class and 28,000 miles in Economy, will now cost you just 28,000 miles in Business Class (the usual Economy rate for Zone 9 to Zone 4) and 14,000 miles in Economy Class (50% off).
See the dedicated Spontaneous Escapes promotion page for Australian members for details on itineraries like that.
Is it really ‘never before’?
Well Singapore Airlines wasn’t stupid when they made this statement. As they well know, we’ve been covering Spontaneous Escapes in some detail since 2017. That means we know exactly what deals have been offered in the past.
Has 50% off Economy Class ever been offered? Yes, for SilkAir in September 2018. For Singapore Airlines also, but in a very limited way, with flights to and from Bali in March 2018 getting 50% off in this cabin. That’s quite unlike the current offer though, available across a much wider range of destinations.
Has Business Class ever been offered at Economy Class rates? No, plain and simple this is an outstanding offer, over and above what we (somewhat cynically) expected when Singapore Airlines ‘promised the world’ with this deal.
Frankly they could have just offered 30% discounts in Business Class on selected flights to New York and Rome and their claim of ‘never before deals’ would have been technically accurate. This month’s offers are a different league altogether, and long may it continue.
March offers – SIA newest Business products
Let’s start with the answer to the most popular question we are asked when this promotion comes around – “Which Singapore Airlines long-haul Business Class or new Regional Business Class seats are included this month?”
Here’s how it looks for March 2019 in the premium SIA cabins:

You certainly can’t say no to the 2017 Business Class seat on the new A380 to and from Hong Kong at 15,000 miles in March, less than half the usual rate. Stretch to 28,000 miles and you can ride it all the way to Sydney, a 34,000 miles discount.
For the 2013 Business Class there is a wide range of options.
Being able to experience the new (can we still call it ‘new’?) 2018 Regional Business Class for 7,500 miles is an absolute steal, though you won’t get much time on the short Singapore – Kuala Lumpur sector.

Perth at 20,000 miles and Adelaide at 28,000 miles are also standout deals in this new cabin.
Non-stop USA discounts: March & April 2019
Discounted awards for Business Class seats on the non-stop A350ULR are back this month, for travel in March and April 2019, but its not great news. Firstly only one route is included, Los Angeles. Secondly only Premium Economy is eligible. This time it’s discounted to Economy Class award rates.
Discounts are for March and April 2019, but must still be booked by 28th February 2019 to be eligible.

Singapore Airlines March 2019 Business Class discounts
Here is the full list of Singapore Airlines Business Class routes on offer for March 2019. An extensive selection, even including some options back to Singapore from Europe.
You’ll pay Economy redemption rates if you can book by the end of February and travel during March.
As always, we include those all-important Business Class seat types as well as the aircraft types, helping you choose better on your preferred route (or who knows, choose your route based on your preferred aircraft or seat type!).

Booking tip
When you scan through the route lists above you might well find the perfect option for your trip in March 2019 (or April for Los Angeles flights), then do a search on the Singapore Airlines website and suffer some disappointment that the miles rate hasn’t been discounted after all.
It’s not made obvious on the Singapore Airlines website or app that the discounted miles rate is being applied – have faith! Click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount:
Terms and conditions
While the deals have certainly changed in this new era of Spontaneous Escapes, the usual terms and conditions have not, and you can see the full list here, including all the routes for this month’s offer.
The key considerations for KrisFlyer members are:
- Book by 28th February 2019.
- Valid for flights from 1st – 31st March 2019 (most SIA and all SilkAir routes)
- Valid for flights from 1st March 2019 – 30th April 2019 (SIA A350ULR routes to/from Los Angeles)
- Valid for ‘Saver’ award tickets on selected routes.
- Blackout dates apply on certain routes (e.g. Paris to Singapore blocked on several dates in March).
- Once booked, these promotional redemption rates are non-changeable and non-cancellable. Use it or lose it!
- All flights in the chosen itinerary must be included in the offer, otherwise the miles rate reverts to standard ‘Saver’ rates for the whole itinerary with no discount. We recommend booking one-way legs so you can still save, for example on one direction of a return trip.
- Stopovers are not allowed (again, think one-way redemptions with this offer).
- Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 28th February otherwise the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply.
Summary
Hats off to Singapore Airlines, they promised us never before deals this month for Spontaneous Escapes and they have certainly delivered. Business Class at Economy rates is the headline saving here, meaning up to 61% off for some routes.
In the past the biggest discount we’ve seen for Singapore Airlines Business Class was 50%, on a single route.
It’s by far the most impressive lineup of KrisFlyer award discounts we’ve seen. Ok so your preferred destination might not be on the list, and there’s no Business Class to Europe or the USA (both of which we’ve seen before), but you can’t deny there are some impressive discounts out there for those able to make short term plans.
This is the now the fifth consecutive Spontaneous Escapes offer which has included Singapore Airlines Premium Economy on its A350 ultra long-haul flights to and from the USA for a discount. This time it’s back to the first deal we saw, reduced to Economy rates, but only on the Los Angeles route.
Fares for cash tickets on these flights remain low, so using miles doesn’t necessarily make sense even under this ‘one cabin lower’ promotional rate.
Strangely Premium Economy awards have not been discounted on any other routes, meaning it will cost you less to fly in Business Class to Sydney on an eligible flight for example than it will in Premium Economy! Odd.
It’s always good to see Hong Kong listed with the 2017 J product, which we reviewed in January, on the latest A380 aircraft, a great opportunity to try out the latest long-haul Business Class seat for just 15,000 miles. Sydney for 28,000 miles might be even better.
It’s also great to see a number of routes discounted with the new 2018 Regional Business Class.
As always our tables above will help you to pick the right flight on these routes to ensure you get the new cabin products.
Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate.
Before you get too excited, remember that Spontaneous Escapes is a great discount but you must have pretty firm travel plans before taking advantage. You won’t be able to modify or cancel these bookings once made.
Finally, well done Singapore Airlines. You meant it when you said “never before”.
Will you be taking advantage of these excellent redemption rates for flights in March? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thanks for the info! I notice that for Singapore to Cairns (Business class) for 14,000 is a fantastic offer! But when I searched for it, it is not available for none of the dates in march even in the drop down list. It still shows 62000 miles needed. What am I missing? Please advise. Thanks.
Hi,
Apologies the SilkAir Business Class tables were a duplicate of the Economy ones for some reason. Now corrected!
Unfortunately Cairns is only available in Economy at 14,000, not in Business. Sorry for the confusion.
Jaw dropped for sydney burned plenty during last nov 🙁
I’ve just searched BCN to SIN for 6th March in J. It’s still quoting me 92k miles…
The flight via MXP (SQ377) isn’t included in the offer. You’ll need to be flying SQ387, the non-stop flight, which restricts you to Mondays and Fridays unfortunately.
Have a question and wonder if you know the answer to this..
Let’s say you have already an Saver Award ticket confirmed for Business class on a particular sector and this offer comes along and that particular flight is included..are you able to:
– considering you have enough miles to do so, get another confirmed ticket/get on waitlist and hope it clears, for the same flight that you already have confirmed tickets for to take advantage of the offer? And when it comes through, cancel the original Saver Award and pay USD75? Will Singapore Airlines allow this?
I’m just thinking that the savings on the miles is enough to justify the USD75 fee for cancelling. I’m taking in example for the case of a Business class ticket to Sydney..you will save 34,000 miles per sector!
Yes I believe that is possible. I have heard of people booking spontaneous escapes immediately for the same flight they hold a saver award for then cancelling the original.
Can’t see why you shouldn’t waitlist at the lower rate and see what happens. The ‘system’ won’t stop you anyway! Whether it will clear is another matter. You could try more than one flight?
I could have redeemed a flight to my favourite destination, Seoul, If i saw this post earlier. Nevertheless no regrets as I managed to book a trip to Sydney and even managed to churn a quick blog post! Nice work once again =D
Sydney is great value – 55% off in J! Enjoy the trip.
Hi Andrew, could you please advise, if you have the information handy, which months in 2017 and 2018 were SQ’s Spontaneous Escapes Program not featured. Unfortunately I am not able to do a holiday within the next few months, but I may be able to take an advantage if the offer is on during October/November.
Many thanks
Chris
SQ has stated that, from this month on, Spontaneous Escapes will be a permanent monthly feature…
Of course they can pull or change the terms whenever they want..
Thank you for the info!
I did a quick check for Hong Kong and Guangzhou. It seems the J class are all on waitlist or at least one leg is on waitlist. I wonder am I just too late or is it a scam!?
@Fook-Mun.. It’s not a scam.. all the offers, will of course be subject to availability.. I already have a confirmed redemption for March, BCN>SIN in J, soof course I looked up the date that I’m on, and there’s was no Saver availability, so I checked for revenue seats and found something like just half a dozen seats left in J, which answers the ‘why no Saver avail’ question.. C’est la vie… 😉
Stupid question, but are these type of deals from Singapore Airlines quite common? I’m travelling to Europe (destination city not important) in late August so I’m thinking there’s no harm in waiting until July to see what specials may come up… Is this feasable??
Europe is hard to come by. August is even more difficult with holidays
Thanks so much for your advice! I managed to get a confirmed redemption on the new 2017 J class to HKG for my entire family of 4 (2 adults, 1 child and 1 infant). Can’t wait to fly next month!
Fantastic, great value enjoy the flight!
Hi Guys,
i´m new on the spontaneous escape train, maybe can you help me with some of my questions:
when do the new escapes come out? it always the same date of a month or random?
Do the routes change often, or are some of them stable?
Thank you very much
Andrew,
Please advise if you have any knowledge about the dates for the monthly spontaneous escapes release from Kris flyer, since they had promised monthly escapes when they revised the miles required for redemption. Would it be 15th of every month or its random? Thanks
Hi,
Spontaneous Escapes is usually announced about 2 weeks before the last day of the month, so yes approximately 15th.
