Cover Climbout (Daniel De Ciantis)

It’s Spontaneous Escapes time again, with the regular monthly list of discounted KrisFlyer redemptions on Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights for travel in August 2019. Not a particularly long list this month, though there is an increase in Premium Economy offers including the return of discounts on the non-stop A350 ULR flights to and from Los Angeles in this cabin for September 2019.

SilkAir has only 15 routes in Economy Class on offer with 30% miles off this month, and as always some of these overlap with Singapore Airlines.

You’ll have to be travelling on a discounted route in an eligible cabin class during August, outside a blackout date, and book by 31st July 2019, to be eligible for the discounted rates.

This month that gives you about 2.5 weeks to book, which is more generous than usual.

Once again Hong Kong is unfortunately not included in this offer, but you can still pick up the 2017 Business Class seat on the new A380 to or from Shanghai and Delhi at an excellent 27,300 miles each way.

Again this month a range of routes offer the new 2018 Regional Business Class including all three daily 787-10 rotations to and from Bangkok for 15,050 miles and two of the daily Seoul flights for 32,900 miles.

One way to Frankfurt in Business Class is back for the second month for 64,400 miles from Singapore. Unfortunately the return flights from Frankfurt to Changi remain at normal rates for August, but provided you book two one-way trips you’ll still save 15%.

Best in Business

We’re all pretty well versed with the rules of the monthly Spontaneous Escapes deals these days. If you’re not, you’ll find the important restrictions towards the end of this article.

It’s Business Class where you’ll get the highest return from your hard-earned KrisFlyer miles balance, so let’s crack straight on with the ‘best of the best’ rundown in this cabin.

Which of the newest long-haul Business Class and latest Regional Business Class seats are included this month?

Japan flights are once again almost completely discounted in Business Class for the second month, including flights to and from Tokyo itself.

If you can cope with the searing heat, these are great value at 32,900 miles each way including older A380 seats but also some new 2013 Business Class on the 777-300ER and 2018 Regional Business Class on the 787.

For lovers of the old 2006 Business Class seats, which we haven’t listed route-by-route in the table above, check out some good value deals like Beijing for 27,300 miles and Bangkok for 15,050 miles.

Singapore Airlines August 2019 Business Class discounts

We just examined the Spontaneous Escapes flights with latest Business Class seats on board, but in the following full list of SIA Business Class routes on offer for August 2019 we have, as always, included the Business Class seat types as well as the aircraft types.

This should help you choose better on your preferred route, as there’s nothing worse than getting a great deal in an average seat. Here are the seat type abbreviations for reference:

Important booking tip

We say it every month, but we still get asked most months! “I searched the right flight but the rate is not discounted!”

The Singapore Airlines website and app don’t make it obvious that the discounted miles rate is being applied.

Don’t despair, just click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount. Here’s how it looks:

DummybookAug19.jpg

We don’t know if there are some kind of technical restrictions behind showing the discounted rate at the search results stage. Actually in our opinion it would look good to show the discounted rate with some kind of ‘Promo” label next to it, and potentially increase uptake of the offer for those unaware, but alas for now this is just how it is.

Spontaneous Escapes is every month

Another question we are commonly asked each month via email or Facebook, from around 12th onwards, is “will there be a Spontaneous Escapes offer this month?”.

Obviously we’re happy to answer but since February this year Spontaneous Escapes is now a regular monthly offer. Singapore Airlines has committed to releasing a Spontaneous Escapes deal every month, around mid-month for travel in the following month.

The list may not be very long each time, but there should always be an offer of some kind.

The rules

Our ‘boring but important’ section. Spontaneous Escapes deals can offer you a significant saving if you’re able to make relatively last-minute travel plans, however there are some terms and conditions to be aware of before you dive in and book for the whole family.

Flights are non-refundable

Once booked, flights at these Spontaneous Escapes promotional redemption rates are non-changeable and non-cancellable. Use them or lose them!

Book one-way

All flights in the chosen itinerary must be included in the offer, otherwise the miles rate reverts to standard ‘Saver’ rates for the whole itinerary, with no discount. We recommend booking one-way legs so you can still save, for example on one direction of a return trip.

Play by the rules

Travel must be completed by 31st August 2019 (GMT+8). What that means is exactly what it says. For example if you’re flying back from Seoul to Singapore on 31st August you’ll find the 30% discounted rate available on all the eligible flights on that day, except SQ603 departing at 23:45.

That’s because it lands on 1st September, which is outside the offer window.

Worse still, as we mentioned with the one-way suggestion, if you’re heading up to Seoul on a Spontaneous Escapes deal a few days earlier and wish to take this 23:45 flight home on 31st August, the whole itinerary will re-price at regular saver rates.

That’s another good reason to book two one-way awards (Spontaneous Escapes on the way there, regular saver rate on the way back). This way you’re still saving 15% of the usual saver miles required.

The more obvious stuff

Here are the rest of the major T&Cs for the Spontaneous Escapes offer:

  • Redeem online by 31st July 2019.
  • Valid for flights from 1st – 31st August 2019 (Most SIA & all SilkAir routes)
  • Valid for flights from 1st – 30th September 2019 (SIA Los Angeles flights)
  • Valid for ‘Saver’ award tickets on selected routes.
  • Blackout dates apply on certain routes (e.g. Singapore to Osaka blocked in Business Class from 14-18 August).
  • Stopovers are not allowed (as we mentioned above, think one-way redemptions with this offer).
  • Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 30th June. If it clears after that, the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply (but you don’t have to commit, see our guide to the waitlist process if you’re unsure how it works).

The full terms and conditions for this month’s Spontaneous Escapes, including the full route list we have already outlined, is available on the dedicated landing page for the deal.

Summary

Another relatively standard month for the Spontaneous Escapes offer for August 2019, with 30% off a slightly thinner set of routes than we’ve seen lately.

As always we love to see a nice selection of the newer 2018 Regional Business and 2013 Business Class seats, and the Shanghai or Delhi options on the A380 with the latest 2017 Business Class seats is great.

Once again a Europe route has popped up for a one-way trip from Singapore, though it’s still possible to combine this with a full price saver sector home and still save 15% of the usual miles.

A range of Business Class options to and from Japan for 30% less miles allows you try out almost every seat type in the book on those routes in August for 32,900 miles. Try for the newer products if you can, as these are widely available.

The Bangkok route is your go-to for a nice introduction to the 2018 Regional Business Class. That’ll set you back 15,050 miles each way and is worth doing in our opinion if you haven’t yet tried it. Check out our full review here for a taster of what to expect on that exact flight.

A larger selection of routes than usual is discounted in Premium Economy Class this month. These are usually poor value redemptions, but can work better with 30% off. Destinations include Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul.

We’re seeing these seats discounted again on non-stop flights to and from the USA with the Los Angeles route, but these are seldom good value as cash fares in this cabin are still rock bottom – from just S$1,355 return in September 2019.

The 2017 J product on the new A380 is only available on the Shanghai and Delhi routes in August, but it’s good value at 27,300 miles each way on these 5 hour+ flights.

As always our tables above will help you to pick the right flight on these routes to ensure you get the new cabin products (or at least ones you’re happy with) in Business Class.

Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate.

The important thing to remember is that taking advantage of a Spontaneous Escapes discounted redemption really ties you in to firm travel plans. You won’t be able to modify or cancel these bookings once made, so make sure you will definitely use the awards. The most painful thing to see is your hard-earned miles going to waste.

  1. Depending on the day of the week, SQ181/182 are also operated by MI’s 320, and once in a blue moon, MI’s 738 or SQ’s -SV series 772. So you may end up with a different seat from the usual 773’s.
