Deals KrisFlyer SilkAir Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes

51% off awards in KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for February 2020

To celebrate its 21st birthday, KrisFlyer is offering an extra 21% off in January's Spontaneous Escapes deal. Redeem for less than half the usual miles rate - a 51% discount!

EXPIRED This article relates to an offer or promotion which has now expired.

Cover Feb20 v2 (Nicolas Lannuzel).jpg

Singapore Airlines made its Spontaneous Escapes deal a regular monthly offer last year, with the official launch in February 2019 offering Business Class saver awards for Economy rates. That meant generous discounts of 45% to 61%, undoubtedly one of the best offers we’d seen. Economy awards meanwhile were discounted by 50%.

Since then the offer has settled at its ‘default’ 30% discount each month, which can still be a good deal on many routes especially in Business Class.

This month though the airline has a really fantastic offer – 51% off the usual saver award rates if you can book by the end of January and travel in February.

Background-Feb2020.jpg

That’s to celebrate KrisFlyer’s 21st birthday in February 2020, so an extra 21% off the normal discount was called for!

We’re seeing Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class included on a wide variety of routes, plus selected SilkAir flights in Economy and Business Class too.

Destinations include Europe in Business Class, like Barcelona, Rome and Frankfurt, plus Australia, the USA and an extensive Asia-Pacific selection with over 40 cities included this month.

The rules remain unchanged – you’ll have to book by 31st January 2020, and fly in February 2020. Offers are subject to saver award availability.

Spontaneous Escapes

Our regular readers know the Spontaneous Escapes deal only too well, but for newcomers or those who need a refresher, here’s a summary of how the deal works.

Spontaneous Escapes

  • Regular deal posted around 15th of every month.
  • Typically a 30% discount on saver award redemptions for travel in the following month.
  • This month its 51% off.
  • Redeem online by 31st January 2020.
  • Travel in February 2020.
  • Flights are non-refundable and non-changeable.
  • Blackout dates apply on some routes.
  • Book one-way legs if the discount only applies on one of the two (or more) flights you need, otherwise the pricing jumps to standard rates for all sectors.
  • Travel must be completed by 29th February 2020.
  • Book as many redemptions as you like at Spontaneous Escapes rates – it’s not capped.
  • Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 31st January. If it clears after that, the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply.

Best in Business

The most important aspect of this monthly deal is where its best value usually lies – the latest long-haul and flat-bed regional Business Class seats in the airline’s fleet for less than half the usual miles rate in February 2020.

Before we get into the full route list, here’s a summary of these ‘Best in Business’ deals.

Premium Economy USA offers are worth looking at

When Singapore Airlines discounts its Premium Economy seats on non-stop A350 ULR flights to and from the USA, they usually remain poor value due to the heavily discounted cash fares available in this cabin on those routes.

This month both Newark and Los Angeles are on offer for travel in February 2020, and the value equation is a bit different with 51% off, versus a revenue ticket.

2018 W A350ULR Seats 31AC
51% off Premium Economy seats on the non-stop Los Angeles and Newark routes in February makes more sense than usual. (Photo: Singapore Airlines)

Roundtrip cash fares on the Newark route are widely available for S$1,500 in February 2020, giving you a value of 2.1 cents per mile for the 71,540 miles it’ll cost you under Spontaneous Escapes.

That’s nothing to really shout about, especially as it doesn’t account for the miles you would earn when flying on a cash ticket, however cash fares on the Los Angeles route are a bit higher starting at S$1,777, for a value of 2.7 cents per mile (Spontaneous Escapes roundtrip cost 66,640 miles).

That’s not bad at all for Premium Economy.

Important booking tip

The Singapore Airlines website and app don’t make it obvious that the discounted miles rate is being applied. Don’t despair, just click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount.

Here’s how it looks:

DummybookFeb20.jpg

In the event the miles rate doesn’t show a discount, check that you are searching a valid route, outside a blackout date, and that the flight lands before the promo is finished.

Summary

Happy Birthday KrisFlyer and happy redemptions for us!

An absolutely fantastic deal this month for those of you who can make or even potentially change your travel plans in February 2020. Two of you can effectively travel for less than the normal price of a single redemption on a wide range of routes.

At better than half price, there is serious value on offer here particularly for Business Class redemptions, which in some cases are now coming in at less than the usual Economy rate.

Even in both Economy and Premium Economy, where it’s often hard to achieve solid value from your miles, this 51% discount is worth considering on a range of routes.

Even Europe is included, with cities like Barcelona, Rome, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt superb value at just 45,080 miles each way in the excellent 2013 Business Class seat.

12Aoverview.jpg
Several Europe routes are available for 45,080 miles in February 2020. (Photo: MainlyMiles)

Tokyo Narita is included on the A380 Version 3, a great value way to experience the new and still relatively rare 2017 Business Class seat for an outstanding 23,030 miles.

94A_2.jpg
Tokyo for 23,030 miles in 2017 J comfort. Sign us up! (Photo: MainlyMiles)

There’s also an extensive list of cities with the new 2018 Regional Business Class seat, with this product now rolled out to many cities on the network within 8 hours of Singapore. Standouts for us are Brisbane for 30,380 miles, Shanghai for 19,110 miles and Bali for 9,310 miles.

Even if your award ticket is only available in one direction, book two one-ways and still save with this offer on at least one leg of your journey. Better still, consider returning from a different airport (e.g. fly to Frankfurt, but back from Rome).

Get booking your February 2020 Spontaneous Escapes deals now as this offer is so fantastic it’s bound to be extremely popular! Let us know where you’re heading in the comments section below.

  1. Oh no! I just spent 95k miles for a flight to SFO. Wondering if I change my dates to an earlier date would they refund half the miles? 😅

    1. If you have enough miles you can rebook under Spontaneous Escapes then cancel your original trip and pay the miles redeposit fee.

      1. Since the discounted rate is 45k, do you know if you need the full 95k to be able to proceed with the booking, per my understanding the discounted rate will only show up during checkout

      2. You only need the discounted rate to proceed. It will reflect once you select a valid flight, prior to the checkout stage 👍🏼

  2. Oh Lord. Me and the wife are booked on the new Suites next month, NRT – SIN. 140k total. Now this has come up, we could switch to 2013 J (2017J not available for our dates) and only use 46k miles. Never flown SQ F or J, and not sure when next opportunity will be given we are in the UK. Particularly the new Suites, we were super lucky to get 2 seats as we booked it before the jet changed to new Suites. I’m leaning towards keeping our F booking given exclusivity. Am I being an idiot?!

    1. Quite a dilemma given the stark difference in miles cost, but the new Suites is a great experience on that length of flight.

Like you say it’s rare to get two savers on the same flight. I’d be tempted to keep that!

      1. That’s the validation I needed haha. The J flight lands at 3am as well which is not ideal. If it was 2017J I’d really be struggling to decide as that is on my aviation bucket list 🙂

We nabbed the Suites double bed pairing as well. I’m pretty excited for it!

Thanks for all your thorough reviews and articles Andrew

    2. @Chris.. Keep your already snagged Rs to NRT.. You don’t even need to think about it..

      1. As most travel-bloggers/avgeeks who flew SQ’s new Rs early days have mentioned.. that there were many flaws in the hard-product.. I can tell you first-hand (ZRH last March, HKG last June) that most (is not all) of them have been sorted.. most importantly the seat isn’t as rickety (hopefully completely sorted) as it was and for those who prefer a softer bed they now have a mattress topping avail on request..

      2. There are only currently 7 planes that are fitted with the new Rs and no one knows exactly where and when a new route will be added or one pulled.. eg. New R to NRT isn’t forever, HKG will or already be pulled etc.

      3. There are only 6 suites In new, vs 12 in old.. Do the math on availability for redemptions..

What your ‘validation’ is.. actually, should be the other way around.. should you have confirmed J and then R shows up but R isn’t ‘ideal’ timing, you should still go for it! It’s an experience that no many will even get the chance to experience in their lifetimes..

I’d personally say that the only negative would be that your seats are on either side of the double beds, so couple dining isn’t possible on those seats.. but they do have a little stool avail for you… which isn’t great but it IS cushioned and, well, the sacrifices one makes for love, correct..?

      Enjoy your flight! 😉

      1. @Happy Camper Ha great comment, really appreciate the insight. I’ve just taken another look at some reviews/pics and I don’t know what the dilemma was. It looks like an incredible treat – I think I’d be kicking myself forever if I passed up the opportunity.

I don’t fly for work or pay cash for premium cabins and my miles balance is modest so I try to fly F over J when possible to get the most memorable experiences. I still smile thinking back to my one flight on Etihad’s apartment. At 88k miles AUH-LHR it wasn’t the bargain of the century but would I go back and trade that experience for multiple longer flights in J? Definitely not!
