You can now earn and redeem KrisFlyer miles on selected Garuda Indonesia flights

You can now earn and burn KrisFlyer miles on selected Garuda Indonesia flights between Singapore and Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya - but with higher redemption rates than SIA flights, is it worth it?

Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia first formed a partnership way back in 2010, when the two carriers began codesharing on each other’s flights between Singapore and Bali, in an arrangement that later expanded to include the Singapore – Surabaya route in 2014, and then to the more coveted Singapore – Jakarta flights in 2019.

While the COVID-19 pandemic then grounded most services from early 2020, the two airlines didn’t lose sight of their relationship – reactivating the partnership on these routes in early October 2021 – but a more significant cooperation was already in sight.

A Memorandum of Understanding between SIA and Garuda was announced just a month later, coinciding with the introduction of a quarantine-free Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between the two countries, which outlined much wider plans including a frequent flyer programme integration, joint marketing and tourism promotion.

It took a while, but this eventually culminated in a commercial joint venture agreement being approved in July 2024, paving the way for deeper collaboration, coordinated schedules, and expanded codeshare flights between the two airlines, including reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, which we are now finally seeing come to fruition.

With effect from 13th February 2025, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer members can now:

  • Earn KrisFlyer miles on Garuda Indonesia-operated flights between Singapore and Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya.
  • Redeem KrisFlyer miles for award tickets on selected Garuda Indonesia-operated flights between Singapore and Indonesia.

At the same time, GarudaMiles members can now:

  • Accrue GarudaMiles on selected codeshare routes operated by Singapore Airlines:
    • Singapore ⇄ Bali
    • Singapore ⇄ Jakarta
    • Singapore ⇄ London
    • Singapore ⇄ Medan
    • Singapore ⇄ Mumbai
    • Singapore ⇄ Surabaya
  • Redeem GarudaMiles for award tickets on selected codeshare routes operated by Singapore Airlines.

    • Singapore ⇄ Medan

    • Singapore ⇄ Surabaya

From 13th February 2025, KrisFlyer members can now redeem miles for Economy Class and Business Class award seats on the following Garuda Indonesia routes:

  • Singapore to / from Bali
    1 x daily, Boeing 737
  • Singapore to / from Jakarta
    Up to 41 x weekly, Boeing 737
  • Singapore to / from Surabaya
    1 x daily, Boeing 737

Here are the applicable miles rates.

As you can see, these are higher KrisFlyer rates than Singapore Airlines charges for Saver awards on its own flights between Singapore and Indonesia – which come in at 8,500 miles one-way in Economy Class and 21,000 miles one-way in Business Class.

Redeeming at these higher rates for Garuda Indonesia flights on these routes would likely therefore only make sense if there is no award space on Singapore Airlines flights, or only Advantage award space is being offered on your preferred dates – which do come in more costly at 15,000 miles one-way in Economy Class and 35,000 miles one-way in Business Class.

Redeeming at the higher rates for Garuda Indonesia flights on these routes would likely only be worthwhile if no award space is available on Singapore Airlines flights, or if only Advantage awards are offered on your preferred dates – priced higher at 15,000 miles one-way in Economy Class and 35,000 miles one-way in Business Class.

Do note, however, that while Singapore Airlines exclusively operates wide-body aircraft on its Singapore – Bali and Singapore – Jakarta routes, with 2013 Long Haul or 2018 Regional Business Class seats, Garuda Indonesia uses Boeing 737-800s on these services with recliner seats in Business Class – probably not worth redeeming miles for.

You’ll also be required to pay Garuda Indonesia’s fuel surcharge when you redeem using KrisFlyer miles, adding a significant cash element not charged when redeeming Singapore Airlines flights.

Garuda’s steep Fuel Surcharge adds to redemption costs on routes like Singapore to Bali

Award searching and redemption is possible online via the Singapore Airlines website. Remember to click “Other Partner Airlines” to display any Garuda Indonesia award space on these routes.

Garuda Indonesia is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, so you can redeem Air France-KLM’s Flying Blue miles to secure its flights, and that comes at lower rates than burning KrisFlyer miles for the same purpose.

This may be of interest to our readers, because it’s possible to transfer credit card points earned through Citi, HSBC and OCBC in Singapore into the Flying Blue programme.

One nice feature of this new partnership is that KrisFlyer members can now earn KrisFlyer miles when flying on flights operated by Garuda Indonesia between Singapore and Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, when ticketed in an eligible booking class.

Here’s how that looks.

In order to accrue KrisFlyer miles on Garuda Indonesia-operated codeshare flights, you’ll have to enter your KrisFlyer membership details at the booking stage, or later via the “Manage Booking” portal, or at the check-in desk or kiosk.

Note that in common with other partner programmes, it may take four to six weeks for any KrisFlyer miles earned on partner airline flights to be credited to your KrisFlyer account.

After the six-week period, if you have still not received your miles from an eligible Garuda Indonesia flight you can submit a retroactive mileage claim, provided your flight was within the last six months.

Only eligible Garuda Indonesia flights flown from 13th February 2025 onwards are accruable, you won’t be able to make a retroactive mileage claim for earlier flights.

From 13th February 2025, GarudaMiles members can now redeem miles for Economy Class and Business Class award seats on the following Singapore Airlines routes:

  • Singapore ⇄ Bali
  • Singapore ⇄ Jakarta
  • Singapore ⇄ London
  • Singapore ⇄ Medan
  • Singapore ⇄ Mumbai
  • Singapore ⇄ Surabaya

Here are the applicable miles rates.

Singapore ⇄ Mumbai 27,500 47,500

The Business Class award rate between Singapore and London is quite attractive here at 95,000 GarudaMiles each way (KrisFlyer currently charges 103,500 miles for Saver award).

Unfortunately there are no credit cards in Singapore that transfer points to Garuda Indonesia, since Citi removed the option back in 2019.

Similarly, GarudaMiles members can now earn miles when flying on selected flights operated by Singapore Airlines between Singapore and Bali, Jakarta, London, Medan, Mumbai and Surabaya, when ticketed in eligible booking classes.

Again, to take advantage you’ll have to enter your GarudaMiles membership number when booking your eligible Singapore Airlines flight, or at the check-in desk.

Retroactive mileage claims can be made up to six months from the date of your flight.

There are currently no elite benefits for PPS Club and KrisFlyer Elite Gold members travelling with Garuda Indonesia, such as excess baggage allowances and lounge access, while the same applies to elite members of GarudaMiles travelling on Singapore Airlines.

However, SIA says this is applicable “under the current FFP partnership scope”, adding that “enhancements to the existing partnership will be communicated upon implementation”.

That potentially paves the way for these benefits to be added at a later date, which might potentially see Garuda elite members eligible for Singapore Airlines lounge access at Changi prior to their flight, and PPS Club / KrisFlyer elite members gaining entry to Garuda lounges on eligible routes.

Summary

The new partnership between Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia now offers enhanced benefits for KrisFlyer and GarudaMiles members.

Since 13th February 2025, KrisFlyer members can redeem miles for selected Garuda Indonesia flights and accrue miles on select routes, while GarudaMiles members gain similar privileges on selected Singapore Airlines services.

While the redemption rates for Garuda Indonesia flights are higher than those for Singapore Airlines on the same routes, they do provide an alternative when award availability is limited. However, differences in the onboard product, particularly in Business Class, should definitely be considered before redeeming!

There’s also the option to use Flying Blue miles instead for Garuda Indonesia flights, often at lower rates than using KrisFlyer.

Although elite perks such as lounge access and extra baggage allowances are not yet included in this SIA – Garuda partnership, future enhancements at a later date may well offer these kinds of privileges too.
