Asia Miles Credit Cards KrisFlyer

Maybank Horizon Visa Signature Review (2025)

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card offers an uncapped 2.8 mpd on all overseas spend, but watch out for lousy local earn rates and 12-month points expiry.

This is our review of the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature credit card issued in Singapore. It forms part of our series of credit card reviews, which are all summarised on our dedicated Credit Cards page.

Dollar amounts refer to SGD, and ‘miles’ refer to KrisFlyer Miles, except where stated. This review was updated on 22nd October 2025.

  Mainly Miles Says

Previously a bonus miles earning option for dining and petrol spend, the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature has repositioned itself as an unlimited 2.8 mpd foreign currency spend option, one of the most competitive in Singapore.

That makes it useful for those who regularly max out bonus earn rates of 4 mpd with other cards on the market for transactions in this category, though there is an $800 minimum monthly spend required to unlock the bonus rate.

The card also offers 2.8 mpd on up to $10,000 of monthly transactions on air tickets, also useful for high spend in this category that might otherwise exceed bonus limits on other cards.

  Pros   Cons
  • Three-year fee waiver
  • Uncapped 2.8 mpd on FCY spend, including education
  • 2.8 mpd on air tickets up to $10k per month
  • 3.2 mpd bonus occasionally offered
  • Up to 1 lounge visit per month in SIN, KUL or HKG
  • Points expire after 12-15 months
  • Only three useful miles transfer partners
  • Lacklustre local earn rates
  • $5 earning blocks

  Eligibility

  • Minimum Age: 21
  • Minimum Income (Singaporean / PR): $30,000/yr
  • Minimum Income (Malaysian in employment for 1yr+): $45,000/yr
  • Minimum Income (Foreigner in employment for 1yr+): $60,000/yr

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature credit card comes in at the entry-level $30,000 per year income requirement for Singapore citizens and permanent residents, making it widely accessible.

Malaysian citizens and those with other nationalities working in Singapore for at least a year are also eligible, with a $45,000 or $60,000 annual income respectively.

  Annual Fees & Interest Rates

  • Annual Fee (principal): $196.20 (first three years free)
  • Annual Fee (supplementary): Free
  • Fee Waiver: With $18,000+ spend in the previous membership year (year four onwards)

The annual fee for the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature credit card is fairly standard for low income general spend cards at $196.20, though the good news with this one is that it is waived for the first three years.

Up to two supplementary cards are perpetually fee-free.

This card is also eligible for fee waiver in year four onwards, subject to a minimum spend of $18,000 in the previous membership year. It’s also possible to request a fee waiver even if this spend is not met, which the bank may approve at its discretion.

Other fees and interest rates for the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature credit card include:

  • EIR: 27.9%
  • FCY Fee: 3.25%
  • Interest-free period: 20 days from statement date
  • Minimum payment: 3% (capped at $20)
  • Late payment fee: 5% of the minimum payment (capped at $100)
  • Cash advance fee: 8% (max. $15)

  Renewal bonus

There no annual renewal bonus for the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card, even from year four onwards when the annual fee may become charged.

  Sign-up bonus

If you’re not currently holding the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card, you can currently receive one of the following gifts when you apply as a new-to-bank customer:

  • Samsonite INTERLACE Spinner 67/24 EXP (worth S$520)

Maybank defines new-to-bank customers as those who:

  • do not have an existing principal Maybank credit card or CreditAble account at the time of application; and
  • have not cancelled a principal Maybank credit card or CreditAble account within nine months prior to application

To qualify, you must spend a minimum of S$1,300 within the first two consecutive months following card approval.

The gift is awarded within only five working days of meeting the spend threshold, which is nice and quick compared to other banks.

Terms and conditions are available here.

  Regular earn rates

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card earns miles at three basic rates, if your total spend on the card is less than $800 in the same calendar month.

Not much to write home about here for low spenders – you can be earning at least these rates or far more with other general and bonus spend cards on the market in Singapore.

On the plus side, the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card is one of the few on the market in Singapore offering miles on spend categories such as Insurance, Utilities, Private Hospitals, Charities and Education, though only at 0.16 mpd.

Local retail spend that earns 1.2 mpd with this card must fall under one of the following specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs).

  Bonus earn rates

The key to this card is unlocking its bonus earn rate of 2.8 mpd on all FCY spend (completely uncapped) and on air tickets in any currency (up to $10,000 per calendar month).

To do so, you’ll need to spend $800 or more on the card (on any eligible transaction), though if you’re looking to benefit from the uncapped FCY spend bonus, hitting the minimum spend is likely to be no issue.

As you can see it’s the S$800+ spend cardholders that pick up the perks here, and those focused solely on FCY spend, at a very nice uncapped 2.8 mpd, and air tickets, at a capped 2.8 mpd.

Air tickets in any currency are the only category on the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card with an upper spend cap.

Note that the air tickets MCC definition shown above (4511 and 3000 – 3350) also applies when using this card in that 2.8 mpd bonus category.

Retail transactions charged to the card within a calendar month that are successfully posted to the card account prior to the 6th day of the following calendar month will be counted towards the minimum spend of the month that the retail transactions are made.

Retail transactions charged to the card which are made within a calendar month that are only posted to the card account after the 6th day of the following month will be counted towards the following month’s minimum spend.

  The uncapped FCY benefit

The main draw for this card is its uncapped 2.8 mpd for all spend in foreign currency, either at point-of-sale (physical) or online.

This gives the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card one of the highest uncapped general spend earn rates for FCY transactions in Singapore.

With no exclusions, this rate also applies for FCY spend in the Education, Medical, Insurance and Utilities categories, which could be very useful for things like college and university fees.

Here’s how the rate compares to other cards on the market with uncapped FCY earning of more than 2 mpd.

* Subject to spending S$2,000+ (any spend) in the same statement month, otherwise 1 mpd
** Subject to spending S$800+ (any spend) in the same calendar month, otherwise 1.2 mpd

The new Maybank Rewards XL card leads the pack here with 4 mpd on the first S$1,000 of FCY spend per calendar month, but a minimum spend of S$500 applies in the same period, and the card isn’t available to over 40s.

While the Standard Chartered Visa Infinite (SCVI) card earns 3 mpd for FCY transactions, that requires a minimum spend of S$2,000 (across all spend) in the same statement cycle, significantly higher than the Horizon Signature’s $800 minimum spend.

The SCVI card also has a high income requirement of S$150k and an annual fee of S$594, pinning it in a different category to the Horizon Visa Signature’s S$30k income threshold and fee-free for the first three years offering.

Of course it’s worth bearing in mind that many 4 mpd cards on the market in Singapore earn at their bonus rates for FCY spend as well as for local spend, so you should be exhausting these first where possible, subject to the spend category and monthly caps applicable.

For example, online spend in FCY with the DBS WWMC card earns 4 mpd, but that’s capped at S$2,000 per month.

  Beware of DCC

Since this card is all about the bonus rate for foreign transactions, here’s the usual reminder on DCC.

A note about Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

Beware of the ‘Dynamic Currency Conversion’ (DCC) offer scam you’ll often experience overseas when paying with your credit card. It’s very common when settling your overseas hotel bill, for example, to be offered to pay in SGD instead of local currency. This is a terrible idea, because:

  • you’ll suffer financially, even after the credit card foreign exchange fee is accounted for. If you remember the SGD amount you were offered to pay, then pay in local currency instead, once the transaction appears on your credit card statement you’ll generally find they were scamming you, you’d have paid at least 2% more using DCC.
  • you will earn credit card miles at the local spend rate if you accept DCC, because the transaction will take place in SGD, not the local (foreign) currency.

In other words, you’ll pay more, and lose miles. Always insist on paying in the local currency of the country you are in.

  Eligible transactions

Maybank maintains a list of spend which will not earn TREATS Points and will also not count towards the minimum $800 monthly spend to unlock the enhanced 2.8 mpd earn rate.

Some of the most important exclusion categories are:

  • Charitable donations
  • NETS and eNETS transactions
  • Government or government-related payments
  • Betting or gambling transactions
  • Grab mobile wallet top-ups and other stored value card purchases or top-ups
  • Transactions made via AXS or SAM machines
  • Payment of funds to prepaid accounts like EZ-Link and YouTrip

Remember that education, insurance and private hospitals and utility bill payments do earn miles with this card, at the 0.16 mpd rate.

Don’t use the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card for CardUp or ipaymy payments, since it will only earn at the 0.4 mpd rate.

  Are KrisFlyer miles credited directly?

No, rather than being credited miles directly you’ll accrue ‘TREATS Points’ for your spending on this card. These transfer to KrisFlyer miles at a 2.5:1 ratio.

The various accrual rates are:

  • 2 TREATS Points per $5 spent (0.16 mpd)
  • 1 TREATS Point per $1 spent (0.4 mpd)
  • 3 TREATS Points per $1 spent (1.2 mpd)
  • 7 TREATS Points per $1 spent (2.8 mpd)

  When do points credit?

TREATS Points will be added to your rewards account as soon as each eligible transaction on the card is posted to your account, usually within three days of the transaction itself, at the base earn rate.

Bonus TREATS Points (to reach 7 Treats Points per $1 for 2.8 mpd) for FCY and Air Ticket spend is awarded “when the minimum spend of S$800 is met”.

You’ll have to wait until the 7th of the following month to have the bonus element of the TREATS Points reflected in your account.

Can you transfer miles into other loyalty schemes?

Yes, Maybank allows TREATS Points transfers to four frequent flyer programmes.

Our advice? Avoid Air Asia BIG Points, which are only worth about $0.0034 each (0.34 cents), or about a fifth of the value we put on KrisFlyer miles or Asia Miles.

  Transfer via the app

As we reported back in April 2021, to get the usual 2.5:1 ratio when transferring Maybank TREATS Points to KrisFlyer miles, you now need to use the bank’s TREATS SG app.

If you don’t have the app already, you can download it at the links below.

Otherwise you end up with fewer miles, when using the online portal and the manual methods.

This doesn’t apply for transfers to other programmes, but do be careful not to use a method giving you fewer miles when transferring to KrisFlyer.

↥  Is there a minimum transfer amount?

The minimum quantity of TREATS Points you can convert into KrisFlyer miles is 25,000 (giving you 10,000 miles), while for Asia Miles and Malaysia Enrich smaller 12,500 Points to 5,000 miles blocks are available.

It means, for example, if you have 49,999 TREATS Points, and you don’t have time to tick it over by making a small purchase, you’ll only be able to transfer 25,000 points across to KrisFlyer (10,000 miles). You will then be left with 24,999 TREATS Points in your rewards account.

What is the transfer cost to miles?

Maybank charges a $27.25 fee for each transfer from TREATS Points to airline miles, regardless of the number of transfer blocks, with the exception of transfers to AirAsia BIG Points, which are free.

How long do miles take to credit to KrisFlyer?

The official line from Maybank is “7 to 14 business days”.

Actual data points show that in reality points transfer within one or two days – which is relatively quick and good news if you need KrisFlyer miles in a hurry.

  Do TREATS Points expire?

Yes, a big downside of TREATS Points is that they are only valid for one year after the end of the quarterly period in which they are earned. Typically this gives you just over a year to redeem in most cases, with the expiry structure working as shown in the example below.

Points Earned Between Expire On
1 Jan – 31 Mar 2025 31 Mar 2026
1 Apr – 30 Jun 2025 30 Jun 2026
1 Jul – 30 Sep 2025 30 Sep 2026
1 Oct – 31 Dec 2025 31 Dec 2026

There is an exception however, called ‘Rewards Infinite’.

If you charge at least S$24,000 to your Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card in the preceding year you will be eligible to join (or retain) Rewards Infinite status. Your TREATS points will then never expire, provided you continue to be eligible for and maintain Rewards Infinite under the same terms (i.e. S$24k+ per annum of spending).

If you earn then subsequently lose Rewards Infinite status your TREATS points will expire at the end of the calendar quarter following the lapsed membership, plus one year. The table below illustrates this.

Lapsed RI Membership Points Expire On
1 Jan – 31 Mar 2025 30 Jun 2026
1 Apr – 30 Jun 2025 30 Sep 2026
1 Jul – 30 Sep 2025 31 Dec 2026
1 Oct – 31 Dec 2025 31 Mar 2027

Maybank Visa Infinite, World Mastercard and Catholic High Alumni Platinum Associates cardholders are automatically enrolled into the Rewards Infinite programme, so their pooled TREATS Points across all cards (including the Horizon Visa Signature) do not expire.

Remember once your points are transferred into KrisFlyer they will then have a further validity of three years from that month, while Asia miles never expire provided you earn or redeem at least one mile in the programme every 18 months.

  Miles rounding

Unfortunately back in November 2022 Maybank moved to the UOB-style $5 earning block rounding for points accrual, which means no points or miles for smaller transactions of up to $4.99.

For other small transactions, this also adversely affects the earn rate when you fall just below a $5 spend threshold, and that’s not easy to predict when you’re spending in FCY, since the rounding is applied after conversion to SGD.

↥  Minimum spend to earn miles

Since any amount in Singapore dollars is first rounded down to the next $5 denomination, $5.00 is the minimum transaction amount to earn TREATS Points (and therefore miles) using the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card.

Smaller transactions, including those converted from foreign currency into SGD which are subsequently charged to your card account at less than $5, will not earn any points.

For sub-$5 transactions, consider the DBS Altitude card (see our review) with a $1.54 minimum spend to earn miles, or the Citi PremierMiles card (see our review) with a $1 minimum spend.

  FCY fee / cpm overseas

Maybank charges a 3.25% fee for FCY transactions on its credit cards, so when spending at the 2.8 mpd rate you are effectively ‘buying’ miles at a cost of 1.22 cents each (which also assumes a 0.3% spread, so should be a worst-case scenario).

That’s quite competitive for general uncapped overseas spend, and remember it includes online transactions charged in currencies other than SGD, not just physical spend when you’re on a trip.

It’s worth pointing out that while the SCVI card can earn up to 3 mpd for FCY spend, its 3.5% FCY fee means buying miles at exactly the same cost (1.22 cents each).

Obviously cost per mile is less for eligible FCY spend on specialised bonus cards like 4 mpd options, which you should be exhausting first where possible.

  Complimentary lounge access

Principal Maybank Horizon Visa Signature cardholders can benefit from three-hour access to the following airport lounges in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, with a single retail transaction of $1,000 or more in the three months prior to the lounge visit.

Only one complimentary lounge visit per month will be issued to the principal cardholder, regardless of the number of $1,000+ transactions charged within three months prior to lounge visit.

Just present your physical credit card to gain access to the lounge, but do note you will be charged S$44.94 if you didn’t meet the $1,000+ retail spend in a single transaction in the last three months.

Your accompanying guests can also be admitted for 20% off walk-in rates at the Plaza Premium Lounges in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, if payment is made using the card.

3.2 mpd bonus earn rate deals

One nice thing about the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card is that it occasionally offers an upsized 3.2 mpd earn rate on FCY spend and air ticket transactions, instead of the usual year-round 2.8 mpd rate.

The most recent of those deals was for spend during November 2024, December 2024 and January 2025, as outlined below.

  Upsized Bonus Miles
Spend Period 1 Nov 2024 – 31 Jan 2025
Min. monthly spend S$800
FCY Spend
(uncapped)
2.8 mpd
3.2 mpd
Air Ticket Spend
(S$10k per month)
2.8 mpd
3.2 mpd

There was also a similar promotion running in May and June 2024.

It’s good to know that you can probably expect a couple of these enhanced earn rate promotions to come up each year with this card, which give you a great opportunity to maximise your miles.

  Other benefits

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card also comes with the following perks:

  • 20% Fuel Discount at Caltex Stations
Get 20.05% discount and earn 1.2 mpd when you link your Diamond Sky Fuel Card to your Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card
  • Complimentary travel insurance coverage of up to S$1,000,000
When you charge your travel fares in full to your card. Details here
  • Visa Concierge
A 24/7 digital personal assistant and “lifestyle guide”

  Privilege card benefits

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card also comes in a Privilege version, reserved exclusively for Maybank Privilege Banking customers who maintain a minimum deposit or investment of S$50,000 with the bank.

This variant shares identical earn rates with the standard ‘classic’ edition, including the uncapped 2.8 mpd on FCY spend and 2.8 mpd on air tickets up to S$10,000 per month (subject to the S$800 minimum monthly spend threshold). However, it unlocks a few additional perks designed to appeal to higher-net-worth individuals.

Key benefits of the Privilege Horizon Visa Signature include:

  • A perpetual annual fee waiver, eliminating the need to meet the S$18,000 annual spend requirement for ongoing fee exemptions after the initial three years.
  • Two complimentary S$20 discounts on Grab rides to the airport each year – a convenient travel incentive.
  • The minimum spend for complimentary lounge access is halved from S$1,000 to S$500 in a single retail transaction within the prior three months, making it easier to redeem one free three-hour visit per month at selected Plaza Premium Lounges in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hong Kong.

If you’re already a Maybank Privilege Banking client or qualify to become one, this version offers a subtle upgrade without altering the core miles-earning potential, though the classic card remains sufficient for most of our readers focused purely on rewards.

Our Summary

The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card now offers an uncapped 2.8 mpd on foreign currency transactions, including the likes of education and medical expenses, provided you spend at least $800 on the card in the same calendar month.

That’s a great selling point for those who regularly max out bonus earn rates of 4 mpd with other cards on the market, or for large transactions like tuition fees, which would otherwise exceed bonus spend caps.

There’s also a generous 2.8 mpd on air ticket spend with any airline, up to $10,000 per calendar month.

For both new and existing cardholders, these 2.8 mpd rates are even occasionally hiked to 3.2 mpd.

The card also benefits from being fee-free for the first three years (and probably thereafter for most), but do be aware of lacklustre local earn rates and 12-month points expiry.

  1. Hi Andrew,

I did a major booboo w my horizon card cos didn’t know (check caps)… snd it didn’t help that both my maybank mobile app and internet banking went kaput not long into CB and I couldn’t even see my points balance, let alone calculate what went wrong.. sigh…

I do find calculation a lil confusing and would be grateful if you could help clear this up for me… 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Assuming it’s all ‘dining’.. what would the spend-cap dollar-amount per calendar month be?

    As always, much thanks.. 🙇🏻‍♂️🙇🏻‍♂️

    1. If you only use the card for dining (MCC 5812) the 3.2 mpd is capped at S$4,285 spend per calendar month (30,000 bonus TREATS points, the bonus being 7 TREATS points per S$1 in this case). Still subject of course to the minimum spend of S$300 in the same calendar month.

      Hope that helps!

      1. It does! Thanks again!

Sorry.. last question, if you know it… I have both Maybank Horizons and World Elite.. Caps are tied to card (exc. supp card(s), of course) or to cardholder? Cos if latter than that’s gonna be sucky…

  2. Hi Andrew,

If I have a qualified category transaction (petrol, rides, food) on 31 Mar 21 but posted on 1 Apr 21, does it mean I have a fresh target of $4285 for the month of Apr 21 to achieve the bonus 7X TREATS Points?

    1. The transaction will count as March 2021, so yes you’ll have a ‘fresh’ month in April even though it posted on 1st.

      Here’s what the T&Cs state:

“Card transactions made within a calendar month that are successfully posted to a Card Account prior to the 6th day of the following calendar month, will be counted towards the Minimum Spend for the month that the transaction is made. Card transactions made within a calendar month but are posted to a Card Account after the 6th day of the following month will be counted towards the following month’s Minimum Spend.”

  3. Hi Andrew,

One final question. The tabulation of bonus points for transaction done today but posted on the 6th of April 2021 will only be out on the 7th of May correct? The T&C you have furnished is mainly to cover scenario where a transaction is done at the end of the previous month (Mar 2021) but posting can be either before or after the 6th of Apr 2021, where Maybank will state clearly how the bonus will be measured and paid out?

  4. Hi Andrew, Thanks for a detailed review. Love your blog. I was wondering if we can use Cardup to meet the initial spend requirements for sign-up miles?

  5. I signed up for this card and thought of using it just for 1 year as their base earning rate of 1.2 mpd is quite low. But they keep running great promos every few months (like 3-4 times a year), much more than the average card, and i’ve found it worth keeping to chalk up the extra bonus prizes along the way.

  6. Must the $800 spend be local spending or I can spend everything overseas within the month (will be well over $800) since I travel a lot and seldom in Singapore. Thanks.
