Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Marriott Bonvoy offering reciprocal status match

You can now get a complimentary status match or accelerated upgrade in the Marriott Bonvoy programme as a Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer or PPS Club member, while selected Bonvoy Elites can also score KrisFlyer Elite tiers - including Gold.

Back in January 2023, Singapore Airlines added Marriott’s Bonvoy programme to its list of partners you can transfer your KrisFlyer miles to, though with a 2:1 conversion ratio and no launch sweetener on offer – it wasn’t of much interest, even if miles expiry was a looming issue for your account.

With Bonvoy points to KrisFlyer miles conversion being a longstanding option from that programme, the development did mean this had become a two-way transfer possibility for the first time.

Now the two sides are deepening their ties, with a “Preferred Partnership” deal offering an instant status match for KrisFlyer Elite Gold and PPS Club members, plus an accelerated status path challenge that also includes KrisFlyer Elite Silver members.

PPS Club, KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Elite Silver members are invited to receive elevated benefits through our preferred partnership programme with Marriott Bonvoy®

Singapore Airlines

That’s not all though.

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members can also get an instant status match to the KrisFlyer Elite Silver tier, and the opportunity to progress to the lounge-access-worthy KrisFlyer Elite Gold tier with only four qualifying SIA flights.

If you hold KrisFlyer Elite Gold, PPS Club or Solitaire PPS Club status, you’re now automatically eligible for an instant status match to the Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite tier.

This status level usually requires 25 qualifying night stays per year.

Bonvoy Gold Elite status is then valid for at least 12 months from your date of registration.

For example, if you register in December 2023, you’ll receive Bonvoy Gold Elite status through the end of 2023, for all of 2024, and until February 2025.

After that, status renewal is then based on the usual Marriott Bonvoy programme rules, so choose your registration date carefully if you don’t think you will be able to hold on to this tier long-term, to maximise the benefits on as many stays as you can.

If you’re a KrisFlyer Elite Gold or PPS Club member and you already hold Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, you’ll benefit from a 12-month extension of your status, from the date of registration. Again, pick the registration date to maximise the benefit.

This status is then valid for 12 full calendar months from the date of registration, after which it will expire unless renewed under the normal programme rules (i.e. 25,000 Elite miles earned in 12 months).

KrisFlyer Elite Silver benefits are somewhat lacklustre, but again do time your registration with the most optimal 12 months of benefits in mind, if you’re unlikely to be able to renew under standard terms after that.

Marriott Bonvoy members holding these three status tiers who are already KrisFlyer Elite Silver members will pick up a 12-month extension of this tier status from the date of registration.

Without wanting to sound like a broken record – timing is once again key. Wait until your Elite Silver status is about to expire, then register for the match, for a fresh 12 months of perks.

Singapore Airlines and Marriott are also offering a “status accelerator” promotion, which can allow you to upgrade your Bonvoy status to higher tiers by staying for a reduced number of qualifying nights, compared to the normal requirements.

In this case, KrisFlyer Elite Silver members also get a look-in.

* Within six months from the date of registration

For example, a KrisFlyer Elite Gold member matching instantly to Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status on 20th December 2023 will then be able to progress to the Bonvoy Platinum Elite tier with 10 qualifying night stays by 20th June 2024 (six months later).

That’s arguably worth having, since Platinum Elite is the first rung of the Bonvoy status ladder that gets you lounge access (or breakfast if the lounge is closed) during your stays at Marriott properties.

Both the accelerated status upgrade to Bonvoy Silver Elite (for KrisFlyer Elite Silver members) and the upgrade to Bonvoy Platinum Elite (for KrisFlyer Elite Gold and PPS Club members) will then be effective for 12 months.

After that, status renewal is based on the usual Marriott Bonvoy programme rules, so again try to time this for maximum benefit since subsequent renewal will be based on normal requirements.

In the other direction, Marriott Bonvoy Elite members can accelerate their way to the KrisFlyer Elite Silver or Gold status tiers by taking only a few Singapore Airlines flights, as shown below.

Taking only four qualifying flights in six months as opposed to accruing 50,000 Elite miles over a year is a significant simplification for an upgrade to KrisFlyer Elite Gold status for Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador members – definitely something to consider if you fall into this category.

Do note that award tickets and codeshare flights are not considered to be qualifying flights.

Where KrisFlyer Elite Silver or Elite Gold status is earned via this upgrade, it will then be valid for 12 months, after which it will expire unless renewed under the normal programme rules (i.e. 25,000 Elite miles for Silver or 50,000 Elite miles for Gold, earned in 12 months).

Marriott’s example of how Platinum Elite status as an KFES member can both extend your existing tier for a year and allow you to upgrade to KFEG for 12 months be taking only four SIA flights

To take advantage of these status match and status accelerator deals, you’ll first have to be a member of both the KrisFlyer and Marriott Bonvoy programmes.

Summary

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Marriott Bonvoy have expanded their reciprocal miles conversion option into a more elaborate “Preferred Partnership” programme, whereby selected status holders in either scheme can achieve an instant status match in the other.

There’s also a “status accelerator” in both directions for selected members, which can unlock more attractive perks including lounge access when you stay (Bonvoy Platinum Elite) and lounge access when you fly (KrisFlyer Elite Gold), with reduced qualification requirements in both cases.

This is definitely a deal worth looking at if you’re an Elite member in one of these programmes, but not the other.

However, do be careful to choose your registration date to make maximum use of the benefits, or achieve the upgrade requirements more easily based on your travel plans, since subsequent annual renewal will revert to each programme’s standard requirements after the first year.

  1. Hi Andrew, thanks for this article, very helpful! I took a look at the FAQs but couldn’t figure – for the status accelerator from Bonvoy to KF, would I need to enter my KF number in the booking? I’m an existing KFEG, but been crediting miles to another program that’s easier to get Star Alliance gold. So if those 4 flights are tracked using a KF number at the time of flying, it might not be worth it. Thanks!

    1. Makes sense that miles must be credited to KF in order for SIA to determine whether you travelled on an eligible commercial flight and how they can detect and preclude booking class “G”. So crediting to other FFP will likely not cut it.

    2. By the way if you are already EG, you can get the free extension for 12 months without participating in any qualifying flights. The accelerator with 4 flights is for Marriott Gold / plat members who do not have current EG status with KF.

      1. Seem like you cannot participate in this status match and accelerator(Marriott plat and above) if you are currently KFEG per terms and condition part c point 8? How to get the free 12mths extension for kfeg?

  2. Hi Andrew, if I already hold both Krisflyer and Marriott Bonvoy, Gold Elite status, after the 12-month extension of the status, what’s the criteria to hold to KF gold via Marriot?

    1. Hi Andrew

The program T&C stated that Bonvoy Platinum and higher members who already has KFES status will get a 12 month extension upon registration. What about those Bonvoy members who already is KFEG? Will they also get a 12 month extension? The program T&C is mum on this subject. The same is also true with KFEG members who already have Bonvoy Gold status (who will also get a 12 mos extension upon registration) but also silent on those who have both KFEG and Bonvoy Platinum (or above).
Appreciate if you can get clarifications from KrisFlyer and/or Marriott Bonvoy on this specific instances.
      Thanks!

    2. I can help to answer this. A round-trip journey will count as two flights, so that means one round-trip flight (to get KrisFlyer Elite Silver) or two round-trip flights (to get KrisFlyer Elite Gold). If your flight has a stopover but has a single flight number, it’s considered as one flight. Hope this helps!

  3. Hi Andrew, thanks for the article. Just wanted to clarify the definition of a qualifying flight on Singapore Airlines and couldn’t find it in the terms and conditions. When they say 4 flights should I be understanding it as 4 return flights? I would imagine if I bought a one way ticket it would count as 1 flight, but would a round trip flight in the same ticket count as 2 flights? And does it change also depending on whether there is a stopover? Would a flight with one stopover be considered as 2 flights as well? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Ian, I can help to answer this. A round-trip journey will count as two flights, so that means one round-trip flight (to get KrisFlyer Elite Silver) or two round-trip flights (to get KrisFlyer Elite Gold). 1. Hi Vanessa, thank you for your reply it is really helpful. One last question, in the case where the flight has a stopover for a few days, for example SQ26 SIN-FRA, stopover in FRA for 5 days before taking SQ26 FRA-JFK, this would also only be considered as one flight? Thanks

    2. Hi Ian, I can’t seem to reply to your other comment so replying thru your initial comment. I’m guessing that you’re referring to just extending the layover time under one booking, so that would be considered as one flight.

  4. Hi, for 4 flight accelerated to Gold Elite. im flight with my wife to Japan round trip flight under same booking. Is that count as 4 flights or just 2 flights?

  5. Hi andrew,
for stay 10 night acceleration to Platinum Elite Bonvoy, did bookings made before registration (stay after registration) counted?
    thank you

  6. Hey Andrew, someone said SQ responded by saying four SEPARATE PNRs are needed? Could you reach out to SQ to confirm? Meaning A-SIN-B RT does NOT count.
