Where is Singapore Airlines flying its Airbus A380s?

It's a thin route list for Singapore Airlines' Airbus A380s between now and March 2025, with just 5 cities consistently on the roster, the lowest level in years.

Singapore Airlines has recently finalised its flight schedules and aircraft type allocation for the northern winter season, which runs from late October 2024 to late March 2025, including its sought-after Airbus A380 services, which will see the carrier’s superjumbos consistently operating to and from only five cities on the network across this period.

That’s the lowest total in some time, with eight cities on the roster last winter and seven this summer, though maintenance on the aircraft is apparently the reason schedules have to be cut back by over a quarter, for the foreseeable future.

Here’s our latest analysis of the airline’s plans for this aircraft type over the next seven months.

Route summary

Currently up to seven cities are on SIA’s A380 route map, but come the northern winter season in two months’ time, two of those will be axed for almost the entire period, leaving a total of only five consistent destinations through to late March 2025.

Both Hong Kong and Shanghai lose regular A380 service this winter, though both cities see short-term superjumbo operation for a couple of weeks over the Chinese New Year holiday in late January 2025.

In total, Singapore Airlines will operate 98 weekly flights with its Airbus A380s for the majority of the winter 2024/25 season, a far cry from the 126 per week it was operating in January 2024.

Average daily utilisation of the 12-strong fleet is 9 hours 55 minutes per aircraft, four hours less per A380 than we saw in summer 2023.

That’s down to some heavy maintenance requirements for the fleet over both recent months and those coming up too, which could leave 3 or even 4 of the 12 aircraft out of action at any one time, unless SIA has some further route announcements in store, which now seems unlikely.

The schedules

Here’s how the Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 schedules look on these routes between now and late March 2025.

Non-A380 SIA flights on the Delhi route

  • SQ402/401 operates daily alongside the A380 service shown above, using 787-10 aircraft.

🇩🇪 Frankfurt

Singapore Airlines sadly no longer operates the Airbus A380 on its Singapore – Frankfurt – New York route, swapping the service to the smaller Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in May 2023, but the superjumbo has been back on daily Frankfurt terminator flights since late March this year.

That continues for the northern winter 2024/25 season through to late March 2025, with the exception of a two-week period over Chinese New Year, during which time the service temporarily downgrades to an Airbus A350 Long Haul.

The flight also uses an Airbus A350 Long Haul in both direction on 24th December 2024.

Here’s how the A380 schedule looks on this route.

Non-A380 SIA flights on the Frankfurt route

  • SQ326/325 uses Airbus A350 LH aircraft on 24th December 2024 and between 15th January 2025 and 31st January 2025.
  • SIA also operates daily SQ26/25 flights between Singapore and Frankfurt, with onward service to and from New York JFK, using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

🇭🇰 Hong Kong

SIA’s daily SQ892/893 Hong Kong flight is currently operated by the Airbus A380, but that’s about to change later this month.

The flight downgrades to a Boeing 777-300ER from 16th September 2024, with the superjumbo then only making an appearance again for a trio of two-week stints between mid-October and late October this year, then again between mid-January and late January 2025 over the Chinese New Year holiday period, then again for the final two weeks of March 2025.

Here’s how the Shanghai A380 schedule looks between now and late March next year.

Non-A380 SIA flights on the Hong Kong route

  • SIA operates a mixture of A350 MH, A350 LH and 777-300ER aircraft on its Hong Kong route, alongside these sporadic A380 flights. See our Business Class seats by route page for details.

🇬🇧 London Heathrow

Singapore – London Heathrow continues to receive twice daily Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 flights, supplementing twice daily Boeing 777-300ER service, for four times daily service in total, on a year-round basis.

There are two upcoming exception though.

First during the first four weeks of the northern winter 2024/25 season, during which time the carrier is scaling back from 28 weekly flights in each direction on this route to 24 flights, as we recently reported.

This will see one of the two A380 flights, SQ308/319, scaled back to three days per week, but to compensate for that SQ318/321 will upgauge to the A380 on the four days per week that SQ308/319 is not operating.

After that it’s back to the status quo, until 1st February 2025.

For a two-month period through to the end of the winter season, the airline then downgauges its SQ308/319 to the Boeing 777-300ER, leaving only one daily Airbus A380 service.

Non-A380 SIA flights on the Mumbai route

🇨🇳 Shanghai

Singapore Airlines never seems very committed to servings its Shanghai route with the Airbus A380, having removed promised service using the superjumbo on SQ830/833 flights seemingly countless times over the last couple of years.

The A380 is currently operating to and from Shanghai, through to mid-September, and will return to the route for two-week stints between mid-October and late October this year, then again between mid-January and late January 2025 over the Chinese New Year holiday period.

Non-A380 SIA flights on the Shanghai route

  • SIA operates up to five times daily to and from Shanghai, using A350 MH, A350 LH, Boeing 787-10 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. See our Business Class seats by route page for details.

🇦🇺 Sydney

SIA’s Singapore – Sydney route usually boasts two daily Airbus A380 options, with both SQ221/232 and SQ231/222 featuring the superjumbo, but currently there are some changes to that plan while so many of the carrier’s Airbus A380s are in maintenance.

This affects the SQ221/232 flights, which are currently using the Boeing 777-300ER between now and 13th September 2024. They will also use this aircraft type between 14th October and 26th October 2024, before reverting back to the A380 for the northern winter season.

As you can see the cheapest way to experience the A380’s latest cabins is between Singapore and Hong Kong, but the opportunity to do that is now very limited given the latest schedule cuts.

Both Delhi and Mumbai are also competitively priced, and often have good award availability, even in Suites and Business Class.

SIA’s Airbus A380 fleet

Singapore Airlines reduced its fleet of Airbus A380s from 19 before the pandemic down to 12 aircraft.

All of the dozen A380s returning to operation have the new 2017 cabin products installed, and while all 12 of the jets are now part of the airline’s operating fleet, at the time of writing only eight SIA superjumbos are in service, with four undergoing maintenance work, as outlined below.

* Post-COVID-19 grounding

9V-SKT is currently in Teruel, Spain – more commonly famous as an aircraft “boneyard” or storage facility – a bit like Alice Springs in Australia – but don’t worry.

Mainly Miles understands the aircraft is simply having some maintenance tasks completed there, due to limited hangar space at Changi, and it will be back in Singapore later this week.

The peak flying programme for the winter 2024/25 season can be operated with just eight A380s, with a ninth as an operational spare, suggesting that three A380s will continue to be out of action for most if not all of the next seven months.

This will probably happen on a rotating basis, as maintenance checks become due for specific aircraft in the fleet.

Singapore Airlines now has all 12 of its A380s at its disposal, but only around 9 are needed to operate the confirmed winter flying programme at this stage.

A380 cabin products

The A380 is popular with passengers in all cabin classes, but in particular it’s the latest Suites and Business Class seats rolled out in 2017 that are still a big draw for many of our readers.

There’s also a large 44-seat Premium Economy Class section, in the space the Suites cabin used to occupy in the older configuration, at the forward main deck.

The A380s also feature the latest KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system and Wi-Fi connectivity – now free and unlimited for all Suites and Business Class passengers, and for KrisFlyer members in Premium Economy and Economy Class.

What about 30th March 2025 onwards?

Singapore Airlines is already loading Airbus A380 operation on its network for the northern summer 2025 season from 30th March 2025 onwards, but there’s a big caveat here.

This is usually just a copy-paste of the previous summer season operation, and so isn’t necessarily indicative of the actual aircraft types that will operate on these routes at this early stage.

Nonetheless the airline has confirmed that its A380 fleet will once again serve Tokyo Narita, for two months over Sakura season in April and May 2025, which is great news.

We tend to get more clarity on the final summer season schedules and aircraft allocation by around January, so don’t rely too much on the aircraft types listed beyond 30th March 2025 until then.

Obviously there are some ‘safe A380 bets’, like the regular two daily Sydney flights, but otherwise it’s fair game for SIA to shake things up with its superjumbo routes, as a recent halving of London flights with the superjumbo shows.

Summary

Singapore Airlines is cutting its Airbus A380 route list from its current list of seven to just five cities this coming winter season, with Hong Kong and Shanghai both losing superjumbo service, except for a brief period over Chinese New Year, when Frankfurt temporarily loses out.

Last winter season the airline was operating nearly 30% more A380 flights to eight cities on the network, including Auckland and Tokyo, so this latest list represents the shortest selection in quite some time.

That’s despite the airline now having all 12 of its aircraft back in operation following the final cabin refit completion in November 2023, but Singapore Airlines confirmed to Mainly Miles earlier this year that “regular maintenance” is the reason for the service reductions.

Let’s hope the airline can work through most of the required downtime for its superjumbos before the start of the summer 2025 season, so that we can start to see a wider list of A380 routes once again.
