Analysis KrisFlyer Singapore Airlines

Which Singapore Airlines Business Class seat will you get on your next flight?

Our definitive list of the Business Class seat types on all Singapore Airlines routes for the next year

2017 J-6bss

With five different Business Class seats installed across the Singapore Airlines fleet, one of the most common questions we are asked by Mainly Miles readers is what kind of seat they will have on their upcoming flight, or which flight to pick on a particular routing to ensure they get a certain seat type.

We’ve analysed data sources for the next 11 months to help put an end to the legwork (and the guesswork) by providing you with an A-Z destination list, flight by flight, seat type by seat type.

The seats

Singapore Airlines is currently flying 5 different types of Business Class seat across its fleet. Here’s a quick recap of what they are, or an introduction for those not familiar.

Star Alliance redemptions

These tables are also a useful way of determining which flights are eligible for redemption by members of other Star Alliance frequent flyer schemes using points or miles in that particular scheme. Examples include using United MileagePlus or Avianca Lifemiles to book your redemption.

Star Alliance.jpg

Since Singapore Airline restricts Star Alliance redemptions into its long-haul Business Class seats exclusively to KrisFlyer members, simply exclude any flight marked 2006 J, 2013 J or 2017 J. In other words you can only normally redeem into 2009 RJ and 2018 RJ seats using other Star Alliance airline miles or points, assuming award seats are available.

Substitutions do occur

The data for this information is based on GDS timetables and programmed seat layouts and is correct at 1st October 2018. We’ll keep it regularly updated to ensure it’s a useful long-term reference whenever aircraft types or seat types on a route change.

Do bear in mind that the list may not be 100% up to date at all times and Singapore Airlines always reserves the right to substitute a different aircraft type last minute on any flight due to operational requirements. This can occur even on the day of operation, so you’re never guaranteed a particular seat type until you get on board.

Changes happen too

You’re never immune from an aircraft type / seat type change when you book a flight with Singapore Airlines, especially if you book a long time in advance – for example 10 or 11 months out.

The data above is based on the aircraft types and seat layouts in the current published timetable, however SIA may already be planning to switch aircraft types for your routing especially in the following season, where the schedule can be considered largely provisional.

For example if you’re booking an A350 Business Class flight to Brisbane in August 2019 and expecting the 2013 J seat as currently programmed, don’t be too surprised if you find that later changes to an A350 or 787-10 with the 2018 RJ seat!

How to be sure

You can use the seat map for the flight you are interested in on the Singapore Airlines website to verify the Business Class seat type being used. You can view this information prior to committing to booking, however you will have to enter some details first.

Alternatively a free subscription to ExpertFlyer also includes the ability to view the seat maps for specific Singapore Airlines flights.

Once you have the seat map, see our guide for the aircraft type to determine which Business Class seat it’s referring to:

Best redemption rates

An interesting aside to the analysis is that it also reveals the cheapest KrisFlyer saver redemption rate by Business Class cabin type on Singapore Airlines. For the September 2018 to August 2019 period it looks like this:

  • 2009 RJ: Singapore to/from BruneiDenpasarKuala Lumpur, Jakarta or Surabaya (17,500 miles)
  • 2018 RJ: Singapore to/from Denpasar (17,500 miles)
  • 2006 J: Singapore to/from Beijing, Delhi or Mumbai (35,000 miles)
  • 2013 J: Singapore to/from Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta (17,500 miles)
  • 2017 J: Singapore to/from Hong Kong (27,500 miles)

Regular ‘Spontaneous Escapes’ offers can reduce these rates even further if you’re able to travel at short notice.

First Class

We haven’t ignored or forgotten the fact that there are also 4 different First Class seat types flying around the SIA network. Look out for our First Class seat types by route article coming up soon.

  1. Thanks to you guys, I actually avoided a 2006 J on my flight next week to Melbourne. Since im relatively new to this, I actually thought A380 would be the best way to fly to MEL. Turns out A380 to MEL still have 2006 J old looking cabin ( although I believe it will still be a good comfortable flight with that, but still, im more into the 2013 J one )

So yeah, thankyou guys. I’m your reader from Indonesia.

    1. 2006 J is still a good product. Have been flying the old 380s and quite like the space of the seat even though some don’t like the width. Why would people complain about having more space? If I fly to Jakarta, I would try (but not always possible) to avoid the 2009 RJ.

      1. Agreed!! I love the space especially on super long flights. I prefer the 2013J as I would willingly give up some width for the useful side “console”, but I am not looking forward to flying on the 2017J which looks really narrow.

  2. I kinda concur with @melvsim and @vs.. except I’d add, IF the seats were in good condition.. I’ve come across too many times in recent years where the seats were dirty (this is something else that SQ needs to be better at, maintaining and cleaning their seats in ALL classes) and/or not in good working condition.. some buttons don’t work at all or certain functions don’t work properly.. KW doesn’t work etc.. I once had to ‘live with’ no KW because there was no other seat available in J, which is of course quite ridiculous..

I hate the look of ANA’s Biz Class product because, to me, it looks like a public toilet.. but you know it will be clean when you sit down.. the same can’t be said about SQ seats, unfortunately..

    1. Now that you’ve brought it up, the 2006J seats in particular are also really showing their age. I’ve been on some on which the bottom half of the bed doesn’t hold up horizontally anymore when flipped down… imagine trying to sleep on that on a 24 hour flight to JFK!

      1. There you go, @vs! That’s exactly what I meant! All the money spent to “wow”.. don’t want to spend 25 cents to keep them clean and functioning properly..
