Updated: 12th September 2020

Work from home has been a fast expanding concept in Singapore since the COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us out of our regular daily office space. Continued Safe Management Measures in force into Phase 2 still require companies to continue enforcing a work from home policy wherever possible.

“Working from home must be the default mode of working (including companies resuming operations in Phases One and Two). Employees who have been working from home so far must continue to do so, and go to the office only where there is no alternative.”

Ministry of Manpower

While it’s been a welcome change for many, those with more frantic home environments, often including noisy pets and demanding kids, aren’t always faring so well with their usual productivity and can’t wait to get back to the office!

Others we’ve spoken to are just eager for a change of scenery, or a physical detachment between work life and home life.

A recent survey by Singapore Workforce Research showed that while Singapore residents are better adapting to working from home, in June 2020 around 29% of them still stated that it takes them more time to be as productive as they would be in their regular office environment.

Furthermore, 66% of parents surveyed said that practical constraints, such as family presence, distractions or lack of space, were the main challenges they faced while working from home.

A solution?

With many corporations still following government guidance to only permit essential staff to return to their usual workplaces, hotels across Singapore have been increasingly offering a relatively new concept to help bolster their occupancy and revenue – daytime rooms for use as quiet workspaces.

Starting at just S$70++ for 10 hours, at least 10 properties in Singapore are now promoting this benefit, giving you the opportunity to be truly productive, even if only for a day.

If tying yourself to a laptop for that long sounds like your idea of hell, many hotels are also including gym and swimming pool use as part of the package to break up your day.

Of course if the work all becomes too much there’s always a comfy bed just a few steps away from your desk for an afternoon power nap!

Here are the deals we found on offer across Singapore, which you might want to consider next time the kids are off school for a week or you have that looming project deadline to meet.

The wildcard

For those living in the East, or who don’t mind a drive along the ECP, the Changi Lounge at Jewel Singapore Changi Airport is now open again and offering 2-hour access including a welcome drink and snack for S$12.

For the best value though, go for the 4-hour access package at S$20, which also includes 4 hours of free parking.

The Furama Riverfront Hotel, not yet open for leisure bookings, is also offering daily (S$15) or monthly (S$250) work from hotel passes from its co-working area the Waterfall Lounge, or at the lobby area. Hat-tip to The Shutterwhale for that one.

Summary

If you’re one of the roughly one-third of Singapore residents still finding it less productive to work from home than from the office, it might be time to consider getting out of the house even if just for one day of the week.

Whether you’re dying to escape the daytime chaos at home, or simply need a change of scenery after all these months, there are quite a few options on offer to get some uninterrupted productive work done with hotel rooms from as little as S$70++ for 10 hours.

These options can also be useful if you have an important online video conference to present or you’re running a Zoom training course with several attendees, allowing you to do so without fear of your cat making an impromptu appearance!

Many of the more expensive options even include access to facilities like the hotel swimming pool and gym, with some even throwing in F&B credit too, to help break up your day.
