Yesterday Singapore Airlines began to tease us with its rebooted Spontaneous Escapes offer, which offers a 30% miles discount for those booking saver awards to and from a variety of destinations on the network, a popular monthly offer which has been suspended for two years due to the pandemic.
The airline drip fed deals to and from 12 cities on the network via its social media channels on 16th March, but as promised today has revealed the full list of offers on over 50 routes across the network, including Business Class to Europe for 64,400 miles and the new A380 Business Class to Sydney for 43,400 miles.
This is the first time the promotion has been offered since it was indefinitely suspended in April 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold and most flights were cancelled.
The promotion’s return has been much anticipated ever since quarantine-free travel to and from Singapore started to become possible again in September 2021, but finally with around half of its pre-COVID capacity on offer the airline is offering the popular monthly miles discount once again.
This time, perhaps in a nod to the difficulty travellers face making last minute plans due to the current regulations involved, Singapore Airlines is opening up the offer for a two-month window.
You can travel in April and May 2022 under the discounted rates in all three cabin classes, whereas before the pandemic the airline only opened up some of its Premium Economy redemptions on A350 ULR flights to and from the USA two months ahead.
It will be interesting to see whether Singapore Airlines retains this format, and makes Spontaneous Escapes a bi-monthly promotion, or reverts back to the previous monthly deal for travel only in the subsequent month.
Terms and conditions
Here’s the latest terms and conditions fort the Spontaneous Escapes promotion.
Spontaneous Escapes
April & May 2022 offer
- A 30% discount on saver award redemptions for travel to and from selected destinations in April and May 2022
- Redeem online by 31st March 2022.
- Flights are non-refundable and non-changeable.
- Blackout dates apply on some routes.
- Book one-way legs if the discount only applies on one of the two (or more) flights you need. You cannot book one-way Promo (Spontaneous Escapes) and one-way Saver in the same booking.
- Travel must be completed by 31st May 2022.
- Book as many redemptions as you like at Spontaneous Escapes rates – it’s not capped.
- Waitlist Promo redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 31st March. If it clears after that, the regular ‘Saver’ or ‘Advantage’ rate will apply.
- For any flights cancelled by SIA, or if an SQ-operated flight was removed from a Spontaneous Escapes booking due to COVID-19 and governmental regulatory changes, the miles redeemed in the unused portion of the ticket will be refunded with no additional fees charged.
- Requests to change any booking details, or to retain the ticket for future use will not be granted.
Thankfully this time round there’s some concession for the ever-vague “COVID-19 and governmental regulatory changes”, which will allow you to get a refund of your miles in some circumstances, even for a Spontaneous Escapes booking.
Otherwise, however, bookings are not refundable and are not protected by the airline’s complimentary rebooking policy.
Be sure to have firm travel plans if you’re locking in a Spontaneous Escapes deal.
Our picks
Before we get into the full list, here are some of the deals that caught our eye this month.
Spontaneous Escapes
Our Picks
- Singapore – Bali from 5,250 miles
On a miles budget? You probably can’t argue with Bali, now quarantine-free, for 5,250 miles one-way in Economy Class on the Boeing 787-10, or treat yourself to the 2018 Regional Business Class seat for 13,300 miles. - Singapore – Hanoi for 15,050 miles in 2018 Regional Business Class
Vietnam is now on the VTL and the country just reopened quarantine-free for tourists from Singapore, with only a single pre-departure ART test, making this a simple trip in both directions.
Flights are over 3 hours in each direction, great value if you haven’t tried this cabin before! - Singapore – Dubai for 34,300 miles in 2018 Regional Business Class
This is nice value for the 7-hour flight to the Middle East, with the UAE now test-free and quarantine-free.
A further 29,000 KrisFlyer miles will then get you from Dubai to Europe in Business Class on a Star Alliance airline (e.g. Swiss), for a two-centre trip. - Singapore – Mumbai for 27,300 miles in 2017 Business Class (A380)
The A380 is back on India flights, so this is your cheapest redemption option in the latest Airbus A380 Business Class seat, on the 5 hour 40 minute evening hop to India, which is test-free and quarantine-free. - Singapore – Sydney for 43,400 miles in 2017 Business Class (A380)
Pick SQ231 down to Sydney each night and score the latest Airbus A380 Business Class seat for this competitive rate for Australia flights, now the country is open again. - Singapore – Barcelona, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome or Zurich for 64,400 miles in 2013 Business Class
No arguments for value on a non-stop from Changi to Europe. Heading somewhere more obscure? Frankfurt is the one to pick for a wide range of cheap connection options across the continent, now that all EEA countries are on the VTL. - Singapore – New York for 69,300 miles in 2013 Business Class
The prospect of flying on the longest passenger flights in the world, from Changi to JFK or Newark in New York, either fills you with excitement or dread! Either way, you can’t argue with the value in Business Class here, and only a pre-departure ART is needed to get you into the USA.
Business Class Deals

Premium Economy USA discounts are poor value
Singapore Airlines is offering a 30% discount for Premium Economy redemptions on non-stop Airbus A350 flights from Singapore to San Francisco or Los Angeles, for 47,600 miles instead of the usual 68,000 miles, or from Singapore to New York for 51,100 miles instead of the usual 73,000 miles.
Low cash fares on these flights mean even under the Spontaneous Escapes deal, they were rarely good value. Post-COVID it’s no exception!
Here’s an example for Los Angeles. Since you’ll most likely need to head back to Singapore, you’ll end up spending:
- 47,600 miles SIN-LAX
- 47,600 miles LAX-SIN
- 95,200 miles total
Roundtrip cash fares on these non-stop flights route are widely available for around S$1,500, giving you just 1.6 cents per mile in value terms.
That also doesn’t account for the approximate 8,800 miles you would earn when flying on a cash ticket, further eroding the value equation to around 1.4 cents per mile. One to avoid, while the Business Class deals offer such good value.
That’s not to say all the Premium Economy offers are a poor deal. Though this cabin is largely overpriced for redemption in our opinion, with 30% off some routes do come in at quite competitive rates, including:
- Tokyo for 24,150 miles (less than the usual Economy saver rate).
- Cape Town for 25,900 miles (close to the usual Economy saver rate).
- Johannesburg for 25,900 miles (close to the usual Economy saver rate).
Unfortunately these are not straightforward destinations yet, due to COVID restrictions either on the way there or on the way back to Singapore (or both!).

Book under the new ‘Promo’ award category
One of the annoying things about the KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes offer pre-pandemic was that you had to select the Saver award rate for the applicable discounted flight in order to then see the discounted rate reflected.
That made it difficult to search for these offers without referring to the master list of discounted routes, since the new rate was only displayed after you clicked on a valid flight.
It was a cause of much confusion, and also meant you had to be on top of any valid date ranges or blackout periods for your preferred route.
Thankfully Singapore Airlines now has a new way of displaying flights with discounted award rates – the new ‘Promo’ category, making it easy to spot the discounted flights when searching.
This also means Spontaneous Escapes award capacity can be loaded as a subset of the Saver award space, allowing you to continue to book at Saver rates (if you prefer the flexibility, for example), or allowing the airline to stop offering Spontaneous Escapes rates on a particular flight, but not necessarily having to remove the Saver rate at the same time, like they did before.
What if you already booked?
If you have already redeemed your miles on a flight that has now become part of the Spontaneous Escapes offer, unfortunately there’s no simple way to change it and pay the reduced miles rate.
You will have to book at the Spontaneous Escapes rate, then cancel the existing booking and pay the miles redeposit fee (don’t do it the other way round, in case the Spontaneous Escapes Promo space disappears in the meantime!).
This will require you to have sufficient miles in your account.
If you need the miles from the original booking to make the Spontaneous Escapes one due an insufficient balance, be very careful!
Since you will first have to cancel the original booking, you are now at the mercy of the Spontaneous Escapes space remaining available on the flight, and it can take a few days for the miles from your original cancelled booking to be re-credited to your account.
VTL flights
So far most of the confirmed Spontaneous Escapes offers are on designated Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flights to Singapore, but if you want to be sure they will be marked as such on the website in the booking engine, or you can refer to our master list of all such quarantine-free services on all routes here.
Provided you are booking a VTL flight back to Singapore, you’ll then only have to worry about the entry restrictions and testing requirements for your final destination country on the outbound leg.
Summary
It’s great to see the ever-popular KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes deal back, with monthly discounts for those making short-term travel plans.
There’s an extensive range of over 50 destinations included for this two-month promotion, so take a look at the tables above and see if any of them fit with your proposed travel plans.
Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the ‘Promo’ rate one-way and the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate (and a 15% saving is still welcome).
Will you be locking in any of the Spontaneous Escapes offers for April and May 2022? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thanks for the list! Are we allowed to enter Japan already? I see flights to Fukuoka
Sadly still only eligible nationals and visa holders unfortunately. Hopefully soon!
hmmm…. maybe SQ knows something about japan opening up soon
We can all hope!
what if tested + on predeparture test, is there an option for these tickets?
Wow thanks for the list. So quick and with the aircraft and seat info unbelievable how you do this. SQ doesn’t even provide such info 😆
is spontaneous escapes here to stay or just once off?
Here to stay hopefully!
If i am flying from jakarta, to istanbul via Singapore (connecting flight) on a business class, how is the cost of miles calculated?
Assuming saver award under normal circumstance from jakarta to istanbul one way cost 49000 miles, does it become 49000 – 30% = 34300 miles
Or is it counted per flight ie from jakarta – singapore (19000 – 30% = 13300 ) + singapore – istanbul (49000 – 30% = 34300) = 47600 miles ?
