Maybank Visa Infinite offering uncapped 3.2 mpd on FCY and air ticket spend

Between 1st June and 31st August 2024, earn an unlimited 3.2 mpd on FCY and air ticket spend with the Maybank Visa Infinite card.

Last month Maybank launched a 3.2 mpd bonus miles earning offer for its Horizon Visa Signature cardholders, which is still running during both May and June 2024, and now the bank has rolled out a similar deal for its Visa Infinite card and Diamanté Visa Infinite card.

This could prove very useful if you have a large volume of foreign currency (FCY) spend or air ticket spend coming up over the next three months, plus the card is fee-free in the first year and does come with some other perks too, like lounge access.

3.2 mpd from June to August 2024

On a year-round basis, Maybank Visa Infinite cardholders will earn:

  • 3 TREATS Points per $1 spent (1.2 mpd) for local SGD spend, including on air tickets in SGD
  • 5 TREATS Points per $1 spent (2 mpd) for foreign currency (FCY) transactions

No minimum spend or upper cap applies to these earn rates.

For spend made from 1st June 2024 to 31st August 2024, Maybank is offering its Visa Infinite and Diamanté Visa Infinite cardholders an upsized 3.2 mpd earn rate on all FCY spend and all air ticket transactions in Singapore Dollars.

The great thing about this deal is that no minimum spend is required, and no upper spend cap applies for either of these categories.

This promotion includes the upcoming June school holidays, and so it should time nicely with many readers taking overseas trips.

Here’s how the deal is structured, for both existing and new-to-card customers.

The relevant spend is defined in the promotion terms and conditions as follows:

  • Foreign Spend: Card retail transactions posted in foreign currencies, physical or online.
  • Spend on Air Tickets: Card retail transactions posted in Singapore dollars classified under MCC 4511 and MCCs 3000 – 3350.

Air ticket MCCs might look a bit vague, but don’t worry the range includes Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Qatar Airways, Finnair, Cathay Pacific and Qantas, plus all other major airlines.

All other spend not listed above will remain at the card’s usual 1.2 mpd rate during this promotion.

Some spend exclusions apply, predominantly for things like gambling, government services and fund top-ups to prepaid accounts, as listed in the terms and conditions document.

Do note that since January 2023, Maybank only awards TREATS Points (and therefore miles) in S$5 spend blocks, so be careful with smaller transactions (e.g. S$9.99) where the effective earn rate may be less than advertised.

While this promotion looks similar to the ongoing 3.2 mpd Maybank Horizon Visa Signature deal, do note that the lack of a monthly minimum spend threshold and no upper cap on air ticket spend, not to mention the longer three-month bonus window, does give this deal the edge.

The Maybank Visa Infinite card usually has a S$654 annual fee, but it’s fee-free in year one.

The card also offers four Priority Pass lounge visits per card membership year and up to eight complimentary airport limo rides to or from Changi Airport (or Quayside service at JetQuay CIP terminal) each year, though this requires a spend of at least S$3,000 in the previous month per ride taken in the subsequent month.

Those spending S$3,000 in the previous month also get a complimentary day pass to the gym and pool at the PARKROYAL Collection Marina Bay.

Another benefit of this card is that it includes automatic enrolment in Maybank’s Rewards Infinite programme, meaning your pooled TREATS Points across all your Maybank cards (including, for example, the Horizon Visa Signature) will then never expire.

As a Maybank Visa Infinite cardholder, all your pooled TREATS Points (including those earned on other cards) can then be transferred to FFPs like KrisFlyer fee-free, in blocks of 25,000 Treats Points to 10,000 miles.

One downside is that Maybank TREATS Points only transfer to two decent FFPs – Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Malaysia Airlines Enrich and AirAsia Rewards are also on the list, but neither is of much interest to our readers.

  The uncapped FCY benefit

The Maybank Visa Infinite card has a relatively lacklustre 2 mpd earn rate year-round for FCY transactions, but during this promotion that’s hiked to a far more attractive 3.2 mpd.

This gives the card one of the highest uncapped general spend earn rates for FCY transactions in Singapore across this three-month period.

With no unusual exclusions mentioned, this rate should also apply for FCY spend in the Education, Medical, Insurance and Utilities categories, which could be very useful for things like college and university fees.

Maybank charges a 3.25% FCY fee for foreign currency transactions.

Here’s how the promotional rate compares to other cards on the market with uncapped FCY earning of more than 2 mpd.

** Subject to spending S$2,000+ (any spend) in the same statement month, otherwise 1 mpd

The next best option is the Standard Chartered Visa Infinite (SCVI) card, earning 3 mpd for FCY transactions, but that requires a minimum spend of S$2,000 (across all spend) in the same statement cycle, while there’s no minimum spend at all with the Maybank Visa Infinite deal.

The SCVI card (see our recent review) also has a high income requirement of S$150k and an annual fee of S$654, non-waivable even in year one.

Of course it’s worth bearing in mind that many 4 mpd cards on the market in Singapore earn at their bonus rates for FCY spend as well as for local spend, so you should be exhausting these first where possible, subject to the spend category and monthly caps applicable.

For example, online spend in FCY with the DBS WWMC card earns 4 mpd, but that’s now capped at S$1,500 per month.

Summary

The Maybank Visa Infinite card is offering new and existing cardholders an uncapped 3.2 mpd on foreign currency transactions and air ticket purchases in Singapore Dollars, with no minimum spend and no upper cap for either category, for the whole of June, July and August 2024, instead of the regular 1.2 mpd / 2 mpd rates.

That’s great for those who regularly max out bonus earn rates of up to 4 mpd with other cards on the market, or for large transactions like tuition fees in FCY.

The card is also fee-free in year one, and comes with four complimentary Priority Pass visits plus airport limo benefits for high spenders.

  1. I held this card previously. After cancellation (end of first year) it was almost impossible to reapply. This is regardless of how much your income is and I am making several folds in excess of the required income.
