KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes October 2019 offers

Every month Singapore Airlines publishes a list of routes with saver award discounts for travel during the following month, or in some cases for two months ahead. September is of course no exception and the Spontaneous Escapes list for travel in October 2019 has now been published, with 30% off the usual miles rates on a range of destinations including Europe, Japan and Australia in Business Class.

There are also discounts for travel in Premium Economy Class on non-stop flights to and from the USA during November 2019, two months from now.

A total of 30 Singapore Airlines destinations are offered this month, with an additional 21 SilkAir routes, though 4 of those overlap giving a true total of 47 destinations.

Best in Business

Let’s dive straight in with a summary of where you’ll find the newest long-haul Business Class seats and the latest Regional Business Class seats offered for 30% fewer miles in October 2019.

The regular inclusion for the new 2017 Business Class seats on the latest A380 aircraft is Shanghai – pick SQ830/833 to try out the new product on that route.

Japan flights are a little more limited in Business Class this month, but there are still a number of options including to and from Tokyo.

Brisbane on the A350 with the new Regional Business Class seats is a good deal, available for a second month at 43,400 miles each way, though it’s limited to a single flight pair (SQ255/266) this time round.

Colombo is a new A350 Regional route for October, with 30% off in the 2018 Regional Business Class seats. This one used to have the old 2009 seats on the A330 (and indeed still does until 30th September), so a step up to the latest product might be enough to persuade you to try this one for 27,300 miles.

Closer to home this month also sees long-haul and regional Business Class seats (2013 J and 2018 RJ) to and from Jakarta included in the offer, though sadly both Bangkok and Hong Kong are not discounted in October. Manila is your other short-haul alternative, with the 2018 RJ seats on offer for 15,050 miles each way.

This should help you choose better on your preferred route, as there’s nothing worse than getting a great deal, then stepping on board only to find an average seat awaits. Here are the seat type abbreviations for reference:

You might even be swayed to choose your preferred route based on the aircraft or seat type, especially if you’re still looking to try one of the newer options for the first time.

You’ll pay 30% fewer miles than usual for a saver redemption if you can book by the end of September and travel during October.

There are no Business Class offers for SilkAir flights this month, so it’s just the usual 30% discount in Economy Class.

We don’t include aircraft type details for SilkAir flights, as these can vary day to day.

Premium Economy offers are growing

Historically Singapore Airlines only included non-stop A350 ULR flights in Premium Economy in their monthly Spontaneous Escapes offer.

Since the airline committed to making the Spontaneous Escapes deal a regular discount, Premium Economy seats on other routes also began to appear.

This month is the biggest list so far with 30% off Premium Economy redemptions in October 2019 for the following destinations:

• Beijing
• Brisbane
• Dusseldorf
• Frankfurt
• Houston
• London
• Manchester
• Seoul
• Shanghai
• Tokyo

We don’t usually recommend redeeming in this cabin as the number of miles needed is often close to a Business Class saver, despite the hard product being worlds apart. With 30% off though, you might make some of the options work for you.

London is 45,150 miles each way, while Tokyo flights are 24,150 miles, which is less than the usual Economy Class rate in the latter case.

It may be worth paying closer attention to this trend to seek out good value. On some flights to and from Tokyo next month, for example, a Premium Economy redemption under the Spontaneous Escapes offer is cheaper than a (non-discounted) Economy Class one on the exact same flight.

But… the A350 ULR Premium Economy offer remains poor value

Premium Economy seats are discounted again on non-stop flights to and from Los Angeles in November 2019. As usual, these aren’t usually good value because cash fares in this cabin are still rock bottom on this route.

We found return cash fares to Los Angeles from just S$1,329 on several dates in November, giving you just 1.4 cents per mile value for a Spontaneous Escapes redemption. Even in the opposite direction, where return fares originating in LA start at S$1,825 in November, 1.9 cents per mile is a poor deal.

Neither of those calculations account for the 17,500 miles you would earn when flying on a cash ticket, further eroding the value equation.

Important booking tip

We say it every month, but we still get asked most months! “I searched the right flight but the rate is not showing as discounted!”

The Singapore Airlines website and app don’t make it obvious that the discounted miles rate is being applied. Don’t despair, just click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount. Here’s how it looks:

In the event the miles rate doesn’t show a discount, check that you are searching a valid route, outside a blackout date, and that the flight lands before the promo is finished.

Spontaneous Escapes is every month

Another question we are commonly asked each month via email or Facebook, from around 12th onwards, is “will there be a Spontaneous Escapes offer this month?”.

Obviously we’re happy to answer but since February this year Spontaneous Escapes is now a regular monthly offer. Singapore Airlines has committed to releasing a Spontaneous Escapes deal every month, around mid-month for travel in the following month.The list may not be very long each time, but there should always be an offer of some kind.

The rules

Our ‘boring but important’ section. Spontaneous Escapes deals can offer you a significant saving if you’re able to make relatively last-minute travel plans, however there are some terms and conditions to be aware of before you dive in and book for the whole family.

Flights are non-refundable

Once booked, flights at these Spontaneous Escapes promotional redemption rates are non-changeable and non-cancellable. Use them or lose them!

Book one-way

All flights in the chosen itinerary must be included in the offer, otherwise the miles rate reverts to standard ‘Saver’ rates for the whole itinerary, with no discount. We recommend booking one-way legs so you can still save, for example on one direction of a return trip.

Play by the rules

Travel must be completed by 31st October 2019 (GMT+8), or 30th November 2019 (GMT+8) for the USA flights. That means for example if you’re flying back from Seoul to Singapore on 31st October you’ll find the 30% discounted rate available on all the eligible flights on that day, except SQ603 departing at 23:45.

That’s because it lands on 1st November, which is outside the offer window for that route.Worse still, as we mentioned with the one-way suggestion, if you’re heading up to Seoul on a Spontaneous Escapes deal a few days earlier and wish to take this 23:45 flight home on 31st October, the whole itinerary will re-price at regular saver rates.

That’s another good reason to book two one-way awards (Spontaneous Escapes on the way there, regular saver rate on the way back). This way you’re still saving 15% of the usual saver miles required.

The more obvious stuff

Here are the rest of the major T&Cs for the Spontaneous Escapes offer:

• Redeem online by 30th September 2019.
• Valid for flights from 1st – 31st October 2019 (Most SIA & all SilkAir routes)
• Valid for flights from 1st – 30th November 2019 (SIA Los Angeles flights)
• Valid for ‘Saver’ award tickets on selected routes.
• Blackout dates apply on certain routes (e.g. Singapore to Nagoya blocked in Business Class from 10-16 October).
• Stopovers are not allowed (as we mentioned above, think one-way redemptions with this offer).
• Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 30th September. If it clears after that, the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply.

Summary

It’s nice to see a return to the list for a couple of Europe flights in Business Class – Dusseldorf and Frankfurt are both offered for a competitive 64,400 miles in October 2019. Unfortunately those redemptions are only available in one direction, meaning you’ll have to pay full rate on the way back to Singapore.

As always, book two one-way awards and you’ll still save 15% on the usual total against a regular return saver award. You can even get back to Singapore in Premium Economy Class next month from Dusseldorf for 45,150 miles, if you can cope with that cabin class on the way home.

Although Osaka has disappeared from the list in Business Class this month, there are still a number of Japan flights offering a discount in October, mostly featuring the new 2018 Regional Business Class at an attractive 32,900 miles each way.

If like most of our readers you want to go to Tokyo you’ll have to book into Haneda (SQ630) and back from Narita (SQ11) to get the discount in both directions, with the 2013 Business Class seat on the 777-300ER serving those flights.

A good range of other routes is available in the 2013 Business Class seat on the A350 and 777-300ER, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Unfortunately Bangkok, a recent ‘go-to’ route for the 2018 Regional Business Class, is not included in the offer this month for the first time since June 2019.

You can however pick up the new seats on selected Jakarta and Manila flights, the latter being quite good value at 15,050 miles each way for a 3 hour+ experience. Check out our full review here to get an idea about what the new seats are like.

The 2017 J product on the new A380 is only available on the Shanghai route in October, but it’s good value at 27,300 miles each way on these 5 hour+ flights.

As we mentioned above a good range of Premium Economy discounts is now a regular part of the Spontaneous Escapes offer. Destinations this month include London for 45,150 miles and Shanghai for 22,400 miles.

Premium Economy seats are discounted again for non-stop flights to and from the USA on the Los Angeles route in November, but these are rarely good value as cash fares in this cabin are still rock bottom – from just S$1,329 return on most dates that month, giving you just 1.4 cents per mile value.

For SilkAir routes, the non-stop 6+ hour Hiroshima flight is good value at 17,500 miles in Economy Class, as is the similarly long Cairns route for 19,600 miles, though the latter is only available on the way back to Singapore in October.

Siem Reap can also be a pricey option on certain dates, so at 8,750 miles each way in Economy it’s possible to get some good value here.

Our tables above should help you to pick the right flight on all these routes to ensure you get the new cabin products (or at least ones you’re happy with) in Business Class, and the aircraft type of your choice in either Premium Economy or Economy Class.

Provided you have firm travel plans, since Spontaneous Escapes deals are non-refundable, you might well find a useful option in the list this month. Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate (and a 15% saving is still welcome).
