It’s that time of the month again to pour through the Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes offer. Once again we are seeing a 30% discount on selected SIA and SilkAir flights for travel in May 2019.

As usual you’ll have to be travelling on a discounted route in an eligible cabin class, outside a blackout date, and book by 30th April 2019, to be eligible for the discounted rates.

Though the list isn’t long this month, options include Economy Class from London or Paris to Singapore for 26,600 miles and Business Class from San Francisco to Singapore (via Hong Kong) for 66,500 miles.

May 2019 offers

Unlike last month, these offers are only for May with no Premium Economy redemptions on the A350 ULR services to and from the USA for the subsequent month.

A small range of Premium Economy awards are available on two ‘regular’ routes, Seoul and Delhi, for 30% off, though a decent range of Business Class discounts include the latest seats.

May offers – SIA newest Business products

We always kick off by answering one of the most popular questions we get each month this promotion is published – “Which Singapore Airlines long-haul Business Class or new Regional Business Class seats are included?”

So many of our readers are yet to try these new seats, so the interest is understandable. Here’s how it looks for May 2019 in those new(ish) premium Singapore Airlines cabins:

Bangkok is back on the 787-10, with three flights per day in each direction to choose from at 15,050 miles in Business Class. That’s a good value way to try out the 2018 Regional Business Class on a two-hour flight.

11A.jpg
The best way to or from Bangkok for 15,050 KrisFlyer miles is back in May, with three daily options in each direction. (Photo: MainlyMiles)

Check out our review of the very same flight to Bangkok in this new seat, then home again the next day, to get an idea of what you’ll experience whether you fly in a solo window seat or as a couple in the middle pair.

Once again a 5.5 hour trip in the 2017 Business Class seat on the new A380 to and from Shanghai at 27,300 miles in May is a good value way to try out this new seat. Sadly that’s the only offer for this cabin for the second consecutive month.

For the 2013 Business Class San Francisco to Singapore on SQ1 (via Hong Kong) is the standout redemption at 66,500 miles, a 28,500-mile saving.

There is a range of other options in this cabin too, including Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai, however there are no Australia routes included this month.

For the 2018 Regional Business Class, aside from a range of Bangkok flights, you can also experience this new cabin with a 30% miles discount on flights to and from Seoul and Delhi during May.

If it’s old school seats you like, and plenty of people still do, Yangon is a new option on weekend 777-200 flights (SQ995/996) featuring the 2006 J seat for 15,050 miles each way.

2006 J (Jeremy Low).jpg
An old one but a good one, you can fly the 2006 J on a 3-hour flight for 15,050 miles in May. (Photo: Jeremy Low)

It’s rare to be able to pick that seat up on anything much shorter than a Manila or India sector these days, with the exception of Jakarta which is probably too short to do it justice.

Booking tip

Once again a quick reminder, since we’re always asked about this, the Singapore Airlines website and app don’t make it obvious that the discounted miles rate is being applied.

Have faith! Click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount. Here’s how it looks:

You have to select your preferred flight first before the discounted redemption rate will appear, provided it’s eligible

Singapore Airlines May 2019 Business Class discounts

Here is the full list of Singapore Airlines Business Class routes on offer for May 2019.

You’ll pay 30% off the usual saver redemption rates if you can book by the end of April and travel during May.

As always, we include the Business Class seat types as well as the aircraft types, helping you choose better on your preferred route (or even choose your route based on your preferred aircraft or seat type!).

As a refresher (for most), the following table shows each of SIA’s five Business Class seat types for your reference. The links are to our dedicated site pages containing all the product details.

  • Blackout dates apply on certain routes (e.g. Singapore to Tokyo blocked in Economy Class from 1-7 May).
  • Once booked, these promotional redemption rates are non-changeable and non-cancellable. Use it or lose it!
  • All flights in the chosen itinerary must be included in the offer, otherwise the miles rate reverts to standard ‘Saver’ rates for the whole itinerary with no discount. We recommend booking one-way legs so you can still save, for example on one direction of a return trip.
  • Stopovers are not allowed (again, think one-way redemptions with this offer).
  • Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 30th April otherwise the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply.

Summary

For the second month running Singapore Airlines has stuck with the 30% discount offer for Spontaneous Escapes, so it’s safe to say this is the norm we can expect from this regular deal.

Of course we’d still love to see more of the 50% off and Economy rates for Business awards (45-61% off) in future, but for now these kind of offers seem occasional at best.

Nonetheless 30% off still represents good value on many routes. The list this month is on the thin side, but there are still some good deals to be had, including a range of options if you’re still waiting to try out the 2018 Regional Business Class seats on the A350 or 787-10. Three daily flights in each direction on the Bangkok route is a good start there.

For the longer flights you can take the 2013 Business Class seat all the way from San Francisco to Singapore (via Hong Kong on SQ1) for 66,500 miles in May, or take a 26,600-mile redemption in Economy from either London or Paris to Singapore.

Unfortunately Australia routes are not included this month in any cabin.

The 2017 J product on the new A380 remains limited to the Shanghai route in May, but it’s good value at 27,300 miles each way on this 5.5 hour flight.

This is the first Spontaneous Escapes offer in six months which has not featured Singapore Airlines Premium Economy on its A350 ultra long-haul flights to and from the USA for a discount.

Partly of course that’s down to the time of year as demand ramps up during the northern summer season, but hopefully for SIA it also means demand is improving in this cabin on these routes. It seems to have been a tough sell up to now.

As always our tables above will help you to pick the right flight on these routes to ensure you get the new cabin products in Business Class.

Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate.

The important thing to remember is that taking advantage of a Spontaneous Escapes discounted redemption really ties you in to firm travel plans. You won’t be able to modify or cancel these bookings once made, so make sure you will definitely use the awards. The most painful thing to see is good miles going to waste.
