KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes March 2020 offers

March's Spontaneous Escapes deal includes Europe in Business Class for 64,400 miles each way, and a range of Australia flights for 43,300 miles

EXPIRED This article relates to an offer or promotion which has now expired.

Background-Mar2020

Last month Singapore Airlines launched one of its best Spontaneous Escapes deals yet, with 51% off a range of Economy and Business Class award tickets. That was an additional 21% off the usual discount, to celebrate KrisFlyer’s 21st anniversary.

This month it’s back to normal with the regular 30% discount applied for travel on selected routes in March 2020 and April 2020 for some USA flights.

Background-Mar2020

In March there are a range of Europe flights with the discount in Business Class, including Singapore to Barcelona in the 2013 J seats and Zurich to Singapore in the new 2017 product.

Several Australia routes are also discounted, including Sydney, and there are some relatively good value Premium Economy options including Seoul for 24,150 miles – less than the usual Economy redemption rate on that route.

Some Economy deals are also worth considering, like Singapore to London for 26,600 miles – less than it normally costs to fly to Australia in that cabin.

The rules are the same as always – you’ll have to book by the end of this month, 29th February 2020, and fly in March 2020. Offers are subject to saver award availability.

Spontaneous Escapes

Here’s how the Spontaneous Escapes offer works, for those unfamiliar with the deal.

Spontaneous Escapes

  • Regular deal posted around 15th of every month.
  • Typically a 30% discount on saver award redemptions for travel in the following month.
  • Redeem online by 29th February 2020.
  • Travel in March 2020 (and April 2020 for non-stop Los Angeles flights).
  • Flights are non-refundable and non-changeable.
  • Blackout dates apply on some routes.
  • Book one-way legs if the discount only applies on one of the two (or more) flights you need, otherwise the pricing jumps to standard rates for all sectors.
  • Travel must be completed by 31st March 2020.
  • Book as many redemptions as you like at Spontaneous Escapes rates – it’s not capped.
  • Waitlist Saver redemptions are included in the discount, however the waitlist must clear on or before 29th February. If it clears after that, the regular ‘Saver’ rate will apply.

Best in Business

The most important aspect of this monthly deal is where its best value usually lies – the latest long-haul and flat-bed regional Business Class seats in the airline’s fleet for 30% fewer miles in March 2020.

Before we get into the full route list, here’s a summary of these ‘Best in Business’ deals.

Singapore to and from San Francisco on the (currently non-stop) SQ1/2 service is a great redemption at 66,500 miles.

Premium Economy USA discounts are poor value

This month Singapore Airlines is offering a 30% discount for Premium Economy redemptions on A350 ULR flights from Singapore to Los Angeles, for 47,600 miles instead of the usual 68,000 miles.

Low cash fares on these flights mean even under the Spontaneous Escapes deal, they are rarely good value. This month is no exception.

Since you’ll most likely need to head back to Singapore, you’ll end up spending:

  • 47,600 miles SIN-LAX
  • 47,600 miles LAX-SIN
  • 95,200 miles total
2018 W A350ULR Row 31.jpg

Roundtrip cash fares on this route are widely available for S$1,330, giving you just 1.4 cents per mile in value terms.

That also doesn’t account for the approximate 17,500 miles you would earn when flying on a cash ticket, further eroding the value equation.

That’s not to say all the Premium Economy offers are a poor deal. Though this cabin is largely overpriced for redemption in our opinion, with 30% off some routes do come in at quite competitive rates, including:

  • Seoul for 24,150 miles (less than the usual Economy saver rate)
  • Dubai and Johannesburg for 25,900 miles (close to the usual Economy saver rate).

Important booking tip

Whether you book using the Singapore Airlines website or the mobile app, it’s not made obvious that the discounted miles rate is being applied. Don’t despair, just click the ‘Saver’ rate and then check the drop-down box, where the discounted rate will then be shown, provided your flight is applicable for the discount.

Here’s how it looks:

DummybookMar20

In the event the miles rate doesn’t show a discount, check that you are searching a valid route, outside a blackout date, and that the flight lands before the promo is finished.

Summary

It’s back to the regular 30% discount for Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes offer in March 2020, with a wide range of destinations included this month including to and from several European cities for 64,400 miles in Business Class one-way.

Non-stop flights to and from the USA also get a look in, with the SQ1/2 San Francisco service included in Business Class, currently running non-stop to and from Singapore rather than via Hong Kong.

Even the latest 2017 Business Class seats on the new and refitted A380s are included between Zurich and Singapore (read our review here).

There are also a number of east coast Australia flights included, with both the 2013 Business Class and 2018 Regional Business Class seats discounted.

Closer to home it’s great to see Bangkok flights discounted, with three of these per day in each direction boasting the new Regional Business Class seats for 15,050 miles each way. For great value in this cabin though, look no further than Bali for 13,300 miles each way.

SilkAir is offering a very wide selection of discounted routes this month in both Business Class and Economy Class.

Provided you have firm travel plans, since Spontaneous Escapes deals are non-refundable, you might well find a useful option in the list this month.

Remember if you’re unable to secure a return flight at the discounted rates, book two one-way tickets instead. You’ll pay the usual ‘Saver’ rate for the non-discounted sector but at least the whole itinerary will not be at the standard rate (and a 15% saving is still welcome).

Will you be locking in any of the Spontaneous Escapes offers for March 2020? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. In light of SQ 002/001 skipping HKG and flying SIN-SFO direct, just to inform that the flight will also instead be operated by a 3-class A350-900 instead of a B777-300ER for the month of March. 🙂

  2. Hi Mainlymiles,

Love to read your article, especially about SQ which is my favourite airline since i’m living in Indonesia so convenient for me to fly with them.Any idea, about other website which has in depth article like Mainlymiles but for middle east airline such as Qatar, Etihad, or Emirates? Appreciate your kind suggestion.
    Thank you.

    Regards,
    Richie

  3. There should be some pretty good deals for the upcoming KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes (Apr. 2020)
I bet we’ll see more US bound flights on offer this time round too!
